HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR MAKES PLEA TO YOUNG

A survivor of the Holocaust has urged young Scots to remember the magnitude of the Nazi atrocity & ensure it never happens again. Rabbi Ernest Levy was transported from his Budapest home at the age of 19 to the Auschwitz concentration camp. He will give personal testimony at a Holocaust Memorial Day service at Edinburgh's Usher Hall on Saturday ` the first of its kind in Scotland. Rev Levy is cantor of the Giffnock & Newlands synagogue.

TOURISTS DIE IN VENEZUELA AIR ACCIDENT

A plane with 24 people including 20 European & US tourists has crashed in Venezuela killing all on board. A DC-3 operated by the Rutaca airline crashed at 10.15 GMT last night near the southern city of Ciudad Bolivar. Local television reports say the victims came from the Netherlands Italy Hungary the US Austria & six from Venezuela including three crew. Rutuca pilot Victor Arauja said it was not known why flight-224 came down.

FISCHER REPEATS EU INTEGRATION CALL

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has repeated his call for deeper European integration during a speech to a London audience. But he made no mention of the ideas he put forward last year of a European government with an elected president. And he said integration would not mean abolition of the nation state. Mr Fischer was speaking after receiving an award from the British-German Forum for his contribution to the Euro debate

SPANISH SAY BRITAIN SHOULD PAY FOR BSE

A Spanish farmers' union has said that Britain is responsible for cases of mad cow disease in other European countries and should be made to pay compensation. Local media reported that the head of the Asaja union Pedro Barato said the UK had been irresponsible to continue to export feed containing animal meal. Britain banned animal meal from cattle feed in 1988 because of BSE but carried on exporting it to Europe he said. The UK was at fault because it allowed EU farmers to buy the feed he added.

THOUSANDS FLEE GUINEA'S BORDER CONFLICT

Thousands of refugees are fleeing fighting along the borders of the West African state of Guinea. About 250 000 people are trapped between warring factions on the frontiers with Liberia & Sierra Leone The UN Refugee Agency says some people have not received food aid for months. A BBC correspondent says parts of southern Guinea have been turned into a wasteland with burnt-down villages and shell cases littering the ground.

CONDOLENCES POUR IN AFTER INDIA QUAKE

Regional & world leaders have been sending messages of sympathy after an earthquake in India that is thought to have killed more than 1 000 people. Chinese leaders Zhu Rongji & Li Peng sent letters to their Indian opposite numbers. And Pakistani leader Pervez Musharraf said he shared their grief. China & Pakistan have had repeated disputes & confrontations with India. New US President George W Bush also said he was saddened by the quake & offered to send aid if requested.

NUMBER OF CASES OF TB ON THE INCREASE

Cases of tuberculosis rose by more than 10% last year to the highest rate since 1983 according to official figures. Data from the Public Health Laboratory Service showed there were 6 797 cases of TB in England & Wales in 2000 compared to 6 144 in 1999. There has been a 34% rise in the lung disease since 1987. Experts said many victims had recently moved to the UK from places with high rates of the disease.

AUSCHWITZ EVENT REMEMBERS THE HOLOCAUST

About 1 000 Auschwitz survivors & relatives of victims have gathered at the former death camp in Poland to mark the 56th anniversary of its liberation. The participants included young Poles and Germans who laid flowers & said prayers at a memorial to the 1.5m people who died in the camp. There were no Jewish people present as it is the Sabbath. The event commemorated Holocaust Day which is also being marked in Britain.
