KEEGAN WINS DAMAGES OVER BETTING CLAIMS

Former England manager Kevin Keegan has accepted "very substantial damages" after bringing a libel action against News Group newspapers. The deal was agreed in an out-of-court settlement after Keegan launched the High Court action. The action centred on News of the World reports concerning allegations of betting on the eve of England matches. "Today has been a great day for us " Keegan said leaving the court.

Cases of tuberculosis rose by more than 10% last year to the highest rate since 1983 according to official figures. Data from the Public Health Laboratory Service showed there were 6 797 cases of TB in England & Wales in 2000 compared to 6 144 in 1999. There has been a 34% rise in the lung disease since 1987. Experts said many victims had recently moved to the UK from places with high rates of the disease.

SNOW CAUSES CHAOS IN NORTHERN BRITAIN

Heavy snow has been causing problems across Scotland & northern England. Shetland Orkney & the north-east mainland of Scotland are worst-hit with up to 10 inches of snow reported. Strong winds have caused widespread drifting especially in Shetland. Over 1 000 homes are without electricity in an area from Aberdeenshire to Caithness Gusts of 100mph in the Cairngorms shut ski centres. Roads as far south as the Pennines are closed due to snow.

NEW WORKPLACE GUIDELINES FOR NHS STAFF

Health minister Susan Deacon has announced plans to make NHS managers deliver family-friendly policies & crack down on workplace bullying. The minister explained six new guidelines to improve working conditions for NHS employees during a conference in Edinburgh. The guidelines included proposals to improve training & strengthen equal opportunities policies. They seek to develop facilities for unions & monitor staff performance.

WEBSITES DO NOT PROTECT PRIVACY ` STUDY

Many websites fail to protect users' privacy according to researchers. A survey of 750 websites by pressure group Consumers International found that many fell short of international standards on data protection. Researchers looked at retail financial and health sites. They found that two-thirds attempted to collect personal details & most did not give customers a choice about being added to company mailing lists.

STUDENTS FLOCK TO STUDY WITH PRINCE

The university at which Prince William is preparing to study has been flooded with applications figures have shown. As many young men as women seem eager to share their student days with the 18-year-old prince at the University of St Andrews in Fife. The university's admissions service has been inundated with 9 212 would-be students applying for just 1 250 places this autumn - up 44.4% on last year. The prince starts a History of Art degree course in September.

WOULD-BE STUDENTS FLOCK TO JOIN PRINCE

A record number of would-be students eager to share their college days with Prince William have been flooding St Andrews University with applications. The 18-year-old prince starts a History of Art degree course at the Scottish university in September. Its admissions service has received 9 212 applications for just 1 250 places ` up 44.4% on last year's 6 379. It is understood they are from an equal number of men & women.

BISTRO CHAIN WITH RECEIVERS AFTER CRASH

The Pierre Victoire restaurant chain has gone into receivership ` for the second time. The current owners Edinburgh based firm Voila bought the restaurant chain from its founder Pierre Levicky when it went bust two year ago. The new owners today blamed their financial troubles on dramatic changes in the marketplace. The restaurants employ more than 150 staff across the UK ` with around 50 of them in Scotland.

DIABETES "CURE" SET TO UNDERGO UK TESTS

A potential cure for diabetes is to be tested in the UK it has been announced The pioneering technique involves transplanting cells into the livers of diabetics & ends the need for life- saving daily insulin injections. It was developed in Canada by UK-born surgeon James Shapiro & has led to 13 patients being effectively "cured". The charity Diabetes UK has set up seven centres to develop & refine the technique on British patients.

RAPIST JAILED FOR 10 YEARS FOR ATTACK

A West Lothian man who repeatedly raped a young mother in her home then attempted to murder her has been jailed for 10 years. The High Court in Edinburgh heard how Douglas Connell 21 watched his 19- year-old victim crawl to a neighbour's home for help after the attack. Lord Penrose described the attack as horrendous & of the "utmost gravity". Connell admitted repeatedly raping & attempting to murder the woman at her home last September.

TOURISTS DIE IN VENEZUELA AIR ACCIDENT

A plane with 24 people including 20 European & US tourists has crashed in Venezuela killing all on board. A DC-3 operated by the Rutaca airline crashed at 10.15 GMT last night near the southern city of Ciudad Bolivar. Local television reports say the victims came from the Netherlands Italy Hungary the US Austria & six from Venezuela including three crew. Rutuca pilot Victor Arauja said it was not known why flight-224 came down.

SEARCH ON FOR BEST TEACHERS IN THE LAND

The search for the best teachers in England Wales & Northern Ireland is under way in the 2001 Teaching Awards. Nominations for the awards can be submitted by children or colleagues but they must be supported by the school. Lord Puttnam chairman of the awards' trustees said: "These awards celebrate the vital role teachers play in every community up & down the country." Nomination forms are available from the web site www.teachingawards.com.

18 SOLDIERS INJURED IN VEHICLE MISHAP

Eighteen soldiers from the Royal Irish Regiment have been taken to hospital after the troop carrier they were in skidded off a road in south Wales. The vehicle was the last in a convoy of three which was on its way from Brecon to Sennybridge for a training exercise. It skidded on black ice & went into some trees & bushes. The soldiers including three Gurkhas were taken to four different hospitals for treatment for minor injuries.
