UK TROOPS EXTEND SIERRA LEONE TRAINING

The Government has announced plans to extend British troops' training of the Sierra Leonean army by eight months until the end of September. Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon said the move would help make the West African state's army "self-sufficient". The British military presence will remain at around 600 at any time. British troops have made an "important contribution to stability in Sierra Leone" Mr Hoon added.

ECUADOR TO REVIEW GALAPAGOS SHIP RULES

Ecuador is to review rules on shipping around the Galapagos Islands to prevent a repeat of the oil spill which nearly caused an environmental disaster. The government said tankers should be required to have double hulls to reduce the chance of leaks if they run aground The US coastguard said the 30-year-old tanker behind the spill would have been banned in international waters. It spilled at least 185 000 gallons of oil after running aground on January 16

The chairman of one of the UK's biggest companies fears the world is in danger of talking itself into global recession Sir Martin Laing of John Laing Construction spoke at the annual gathering of government ministers & leading international companies. The World Economic Forum is meeting in the Swiss ski resort of Davos. Sir Martin spoke after news of a slow- down in the US economy. The dollar/euro relationship is to be discussed today.

EMPTY PROMISES JIBE AFTER OAP CLIMBDOWN

Opposition parties insist pensioners have been offered empty promises by the Scottish Executive over long-term care. The Scottish National Party & the Conservatives are keeping up pressure after a climdown by minsiters. Labour's Tom McCabe outlined plans for free personal care ` just minutes ahead of an expected Holyrood defeat. Meanwhile Lib Dem Deputy First Minister Jim Wallace urged all MSPs to stick to their principles and stressed free care will be provided.

WEBSITES DO NOT PROTECT PRIVACY ` STUDY

Many websites fail to protect users' privacy according to researchers. A survey of 750 websites by pressure group Consumers International found that many fell short of international standards on data protection. Researchers looked at retail financial and health sites. They found that two-thirds attempted to collect personal details & most did not give customers a choice about being added to company mailing lists.
