HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR MAKES PLEA TO YOUNG

A survivor of the Holocaust has urged young Scots to remember the magnitude of the Nazi atrocity & ensure it never happens again. Rabbi Ernest Levy was transported from his Budapest home at the age of 19 to the Auschwitz concentration camp. He will give personal testimony at a Holocaust Memorial Day service at Edinburgh's Usher Hall on Saturday ` the first of its kind in Scotland. Rev Levy is cantor of the Giffnock & Newlands synagogue.

Health minister Susan Deacon has announced plans to make NHS managers deliver family-friendly policies & crack down on workplace bullying. The minister explained six new guidelines to improve working conditions for NHS employees during a conference in Edinburgh. The guidelines included proposals to improve training & strengthen equal opportunities policies. They seek to develop facilities for unions & monitor staff performance.

HOLOCAUST CEREMONIES CENTRE ON CAPITAL

The capital was chosen as the focus for the nation's commemoration of Britain's first Holocaust Day. A small crowd watched the release of 600 blue balloons at the west end of Princes Street Gardens. Each bore a message from some of the schoolchildren who have been visiting the Anne Frank Exhibition in Edinburgh. Later First Minister Henry McLeish & Scottish Secretary Helen Liddle were taking part in a special ceremony at the Usher Hall.

ELDERLY CARE PLANS IN "TOTAL CONFUSION"

The Scottish Executive has been accused of leaving its intentions for care for the elderly in complete confusion. Yesterday the Executive appeared to make a U-turn promising to bring in free personal care for all. The SNP called the statement a con trick and Tory health spokeswoman Mary Scanlon also criticised the move. She said: "This is a delaying tactic which has been acknowledged by Alzheimer's Scotland and care of the elderly is in total confusion."

NUMBER OF CASES OF TB ON THE INCREASE

Cases of tuberculosis rose by more than 10% last year to the highest rate since 1983 according to official figures. Data from the Public Health Laboratory Service showed there were 6 797 cases of TB in England & Wales in 2000 compared to 6 144 in 1999. There has been a 34% rise in the lung disease since 1987. Experts said many victims had recently moved to the UK from places with high rates of the disease.

DOCTORS TO BE OFFERED NHS SALARY OPTION

A scheme aimed at attracting more GPs into deprived areas has been announced by Health Minister Susan Deacon. From April some family doctors will have the option of being salaried employees of the NHS instead of running their own surgeries. The changes are to help recruit & retain doctors in areas where GPs might not choose to set up practices. Five trials which have been running in Edinburgh Glasgow Aberdeen & Ayrshire are to be made permanent.

MILBURN HINTS AT LAWS ON ORGAN DONATION

The Health Secretary has indicated that new laws will be introduced to protect patients treated under the NHS. Changes in the laws governing consent to operations & organ donation are needed to restore the public's trust in the NHS Alan Milburn said. He stressed that patients should be properly informed about their treatment An independent report into the organs scandal at Alder Hey children's hospital is due to be released tomorrow

BISTRO CHAIN WITH RECEIVERS AFTER CRASH

The Pierre Victoire restaurant chain has gone into receivership ` for the second time. The current owners Edinburgh based firm Voila bought the restaurant chain from its founder Pierre Levicky when it went bust two year ago. The new owners today blamed their financial troubles on dramatic changes in the marketplace. The restaurants employ more than 150 staff across the UK ` with around 50 of them in Scotland.

UNDERGROUND STAFF TO HOLD THREE STRIKES

London Underground workers have voted to stage three one-day strikes after a row over safety. The Rail Maritime & Transport Union and drivers' union Aslef are concerned about safety if a public private partnership to run the Tube goes ahead. London Underground admitted there had been "confusion" about PPP but pledged safety would never be compromised. The strikes will take place on February 5 12 & 19 the unions announced.

The Democratic Unionist Party says it may not contest several constituencies held by opponents of the Good Friday peace agreement at the General Election Deputy leader Peter Robinson said to oppose the MPs in West Tyrone Belfast South & North Down may split the vote and elect pro-agreement candidates. The seats are held by William Thompson Martyn Smyth & Robert McCartney. A deal may be made in Fermanagh & South Tyrone where Ken Maginnis is retiring.
