MEN SHOT IN LEGS IN N IRELAND ATTACKS

Three men are being treated in hospital for gunshot wounds after paramilitary- style shootings in Northern Ireland. A 28-year-old man was bundled into a car in Rathcoole Belfast and driven to New Mossley where he was shot in both legs. A second man was abducted by two men in a car in Carrickfergus & shot in the lower leg. And a 19-year-old youth was shot in both legs in north Belfast.

A West Lothian man who repeatedly raped a young mother in her home then attempted to murder her has been jailed for 10 years. The High Court in Edinburgh heard how Douglas Connell 21 watched his 19- year-old victim crawl to a neighbour's home for help after the attack. Lord Penrose described the attack as horrendous & of the "utmost gravity". Connell admitted repeatedly raping & attempting to murder the woman at her home last September.

A Florida boy who said he accidentally killed a six-year-old girl while Lionel Tate 13 faces a life prison sentence without parole for the attack on Tiffany Eunick in July 1999. A Fort Lauderdale court heard Tate's traffic police officer mother had been baby-sitting the girl at their home. Tate punched kicked & stomped on the girl as his mother was sleeping.

KEEGAN WINS DAMAGES OVER BETTING CLAIMS

Former England manager Kevin Keegan has accepted "very substantial damages" after bringing a libel action against News Group newspapers. The deal was agreed in an out-of-court settlement after Keegan launched the High Court action. The action centred on News of the World reports concerning allegations of betting on the eve of England matches. "Today has been a great day for us " Keegan said leaving the court.

BISTRO CHAIN WITH RECEIVERS AFTER CRASH

The Pierre Victoire restaurant chain has gone into receivership ` for the second time. The current owners Edinburgh based firm Voila bought the restaurant chain from its founder Pierre Levicky when it went bust two year ago. The new owners today blamed their financial troubles on dramatic changes in the marketplace. The restaurants employ more than 150 staff across the UK ` with around 50 of them in Scotland.

HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR MAKES PLEA TO YOUNG

A survivor of the Holocaust has urged young Scots to remember the magnitude of the Nazi atrocity & ensure it never happens again. Rabbi Ernest Levy was transported from his Budapest home at the age of 19 to the Auschwitz concentration camp. He will give personal testimony at a Holocaust Memorial Day service at Edinburgh's Usher Hall on Saturday ` the first of its kind in Scotland. Rev Levy is cantor of the Giffnock & Newlands synagogue.

SIX YEARS JAIL FOR SEXUAL MOLESTER MONK

A Catholic monk has been jailed for six years for sexually molesting women who had come to him for spiritual guidance. Robert Deadman 69 was found guilty last November of 11 counts of indecent assault against four women over a 10- year period from 1983 to 1993. Sentencing him at Leicester Crown Court the judge described Deadman as a "sexual predator of vulnerable women". He said the women had been used for Deadman's "own sexual gratification".

SARAH TELEVISION PLEA SPARKS 270 CALLS

Detectives investigating the murder of eight-year-old Sarah Payne received 270 calls after an appeal on Crimewatch UK. A distinctive clown-patterned curtain found during the investigation featured in an appeal on the BBC show last night West Sussex police said the owners of the curtain had now been traced & had been able to offer further information. Sarah's body was found alongside the A29 near Pulborough West Sussex two weeks after she disappeared on July 1.

SEARCH FOR QUAKE VICTIM CALLED OFF

Rescuers have called off the search for what could have been a survivor of the earthquake which shook Central America eight days ago. They had been holding out hope that the man may have survived nine days under a mudslide which hit the town of Las Colinas El Salvador. The rescuers had detected possible signs of life from under a building. The quake killed more than 700 people in El Salvador say local officials.

NUMBER OF CASES OF TB ON THE INCREASE

Cases of tuberculosis rose by more than 10% last year to the highest rate since 1983 according to official figures. Data from the Public Health Laboratory Service showed there were 6 797 cases of TB in England & Wales in 2000 compared to 6 144 in 1999. There has been a 34% rise in the lung disease since 1987. Experts said many victims had recently moved to the UK from places with high rates of the disease.
