ASYLUM APPLICATIONS HIT ALL-TIME HIGH

The number of people claiming asylum in Britain hit an all-time high of more than 76 000 last year. The total was nearly 5 000 more than 1999. Because some asylum seekers arrive with families the true figure is closer to 100 000. Nearly 10 200 people were recognised as refugees & granted asylum almost 2 400 more than the previous year. Some 76 850 people were refused asylum the Home Office said.

BLAIR BACKING VAZ IN PASSPORT AFFAIR

The Prime Minister has backed Keith Vaz after the Europe minister became embroiled in the Hinduja passport row. Mr Vaz has declined to reveal what he said in letters to Tony Blair & the Home Office in support of the Indian tycoons' passport applications. "I cannot see anything wrong with what has been done " Mr Blair said. Mr Vaz had simply made representations on behalf of other members of the Asian community he added.

REFUGEES "STARVE UNDER VOUCHER SYSTEM"

Asylum seekers are starving while they wait to learn whether they can stay in Britain the Refugee Council has said. Problems in issuing vouchers to asylum seekers in place of benefits means they are going "days or weeks" without food council chief Nick Hardwick said. His staff found it "impossible" to get through to the Home Office to take up " grievances he told BBC Radio Four. The voucher system was "under siege" and had broken down he said.

1 000 FEARED DEAD IN INDIAN EARTHQUAKE

Up to 1 000 people are feared to have been killed in an earthquake in the western Indian state of Gujarat. The quake which measured 6.9 on the Richter scale rocked buildings in Pakistan India & Nepal. Most of the casualties were from the town of Bhuj near the Pakistan border while 200 are believed to have died in the city of Ahmedabad. At least eight people died in the southern Pakistani province of Sindh.

CONDOLENCES POUR IN AFTER INDIA QUAKE

Regional & world leaders have been sending messages of sympathy after an earthquake in India that is thought to have killed more than 1 000 people. Chinese leaders Zhu Rongji & Li Peng sent letters to their Indian opposite numbers. And Pakistani leader Pervez Musharraf said he shared their grief. China & Pakistan have had repeated disputes & confrontations with India. New US President George W Bush also said he was saddened by the quake & offered to send aid if requested.

ISRAEL TO RETURN TO MIDDLE EAST TALKS

Israel is expected to resume Middle East peace talks with the Palestinians in the Egyptian resort of Taba. The latest round of talks comes two days after Israel halted negotiations following the killings of two civilians near the Palestinian town of Tulkarm. Ehud Barak decided to resume talks after meeting senior officials. The two sides are hoping to reach a framework peace deal before the Israeli prime ministerial poll on February 6.

NATION PROUD OF NISSAN WORKERS SAYS PM

Tony Blair has visited the Nissan car plant in Sunderland to congratulate its workers on securing a huge new contract The Prime Minister chatted to workers at the Wearside plant the day after they won a £235m contract to build the new Micra model. Mr Blair said the deal had been secured due to the "highly skilled & productive workforce" at the plant. "The whole country is very proud " he told assembly-line workers.

PM ORDERS REVIEW OF UK PASSPORT BID

Tony Blair has ordered a review of the handling of businessman Srichand Hinduja's application for a UK passport He told the Commons he wanted the inquiry to ensure the application had been dealt with properly. The findings of Sir Anthony Hammond's review will be published. But the PM accepted Peter Mandelson's original statement on the passport row had been misleading & his resignation had been accepted on that basis.
