HOSPITALS ADMIT TO GIVING AWAY ORGANS

Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool has admitted giving organs from living children to a drugs company which donated cash to its cardiac department. Thymus glands taken in heart operations were given to drugs company Aventis Pasteur for research from 1991 to 1993. Birmingham Children's Hospital says it also gave them to an unnamed firm in the early 1990s & received a cash sum A probe is under way at both hospitals into removal of dead babies' organs.

Health Secretary Alan Milburn has called for fundamental changes in the procedures surrounding the removal & use of patients' organs. It follows Alder Hey Hospital's admission that organs were removed from children & given to a drugs firm. Mr Milburn said he would be making a full statement to the Commons next week The Alder Hey families support group Pity2 said it was appalled by the latest disclosure about the hospital.

MAN NAMED AFTER MOTHER AND SONS STABBED

Police investigating the stabbing of a mother & her two young sons yesterday have named a man they are seeking. The 36-year-old woman & her children aged five & seven were attacked at their home in Ilfracombe Devon. Their injuries were "not life-threatening". A man was seen running away towards nearby cliffs but police found only a slipper in the area. They now want to speak to David Parker 44 who is 5ft 11ins with brown hair.

34 CHARGED AFTER MAJOR POLICE OPERATION

Police in South Yorkshire have charged 34 people with a total of 60 offences after a major operation recovered drugs weapons & stolen cars. Drugs ` mainly heroin ` with a street value of £4 000 knives a CS gas canister & two stolen cars were recovered in the operation in Doncaster The operation codenamed Alcatraz also recovered stolen vehicle licences. The men & women charged have all been released until a later date.

SENIOR TORY CALLS FOR CURB ON ABORTION

Shadow health secretary Dr Liam Fox has called for a "huge restriction if not abolition" of abortion it is reported. The senior Conservative is thought to have urged a shortening of the 24-week limit on terminations. He asks Tories to pray for change in the Conservative Christian Fellowship prayerbook The Independent reports. Dr Fox reportedly said they should ask God for "a huge restriction of our pro-abortion laws".

MILBURN SAYS ORGANS REPORT "SHOCKING"

The Health Secretary has said the report into the removal & storage of children's organs at Alder Hey hospital is "the most shocking he has ever read" The report will be published on Tuesday and is the result of an independent inquiry by Michael Redfern QC. Alan Milburn says it describes the "systematic harvesting" of children's organs without proper parental consent. In a speech tomorrow he will make a commitment to change the law on consent

SOLDIER DIES AFTER SHOOTING AT BARRACKS

A soldier who was shot at his barracks earlier this week has died in hospital. Corporal Anthony Green 25 from Carlisle Cumbria was a chef with the Royal Logistics Corps attached to the 1st Battalion The Royal Scots. He was shot as he walked through Shackleton Barracks Ballykelly County Londonderry. The Army has confirmed the shot was fired from inside the camp. Police are investigating his death & have already questioned one man.
