Russian customs intercepted an unusual contraband on the border with China. Interfax news agency said two lorries taking scrap metal out of Russia were found to be carrying concealed seafood. Hidden under aluminium sheets were two and a half tonnes of sturgeon & nearly a tonne of salted jellyfish in barrels customs officials said. Smugglers stand to make vast profits because like many other species jellyfish are considered a nuisance in Russia & a delicacy in China.

Almost 15 000 people may have died in yesterday's earthquake in the western Indian state of Gujarat Defence Minister George Fernandes has said. The marshy coastal district of Kutch around the town of Bhuj is thought to contain 13 000 of those who died. Limited communication links to Bhuj have only just been restored. In Pakistan the newspaper Dawn has reported that 15 people were killed & about 108 wounded in the quake.
Workers at BMW have voted to accept a new two-year pay deal. The staff at BMW's Cowley plant in Oxfordshire are to build the new Mini. The German firm had described the deal as the best in the UK motor industry for the past 12 months giving pay rises of at least 10% over two years. The deal involving more flexible shift patterns had previously been rejected by a narrow margin but union leaders urged workers to agree to it.

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has repeated his call for deeper European integration during a speech to a London audience. But he made no mention of the ideas he put forward last year of a European government with an elected president. And he said integration would not mean abolition of the nation state. An estimated 40 000 GM workers are taking action unions say including nearly 4 000 in Frankfurt Germany. Staff at the Vauxhall plant in Luton where 2 000 jobs will go when it shuts next year failed to turn up for duty. One union official said the atmosphere was like a "graveyard".

Political & religious leaders are to attend a service to mark Britain's first Holocaust Memorial Day. It is being held exactly 56 years after Allied troops liberated the Auschwitz Nazi death camp at the end of WWII. Memorial days are also being marked in Germany Italy & Sweden. Tonight's service of remembrance is taking place at Methodist Central Hall in Westminster. It will be attended by survivors of the Holocaust.
A new guide to camping on Dartmoor has been scrapped because the Army feared advice on going to the toilet could result in campers blowing themselves up The National Park Authority had advised digging a hole for disposal. In the past there has been live firing across the moor & the Army warned such digging might detonate a shell. The Dartmoor Preservation Association says it is a damning indictment of the dangers of military training.

Surgeons in Aberdeen are studying a technique to "regrow" amputated fingers by stretching the bone. The Ilizarov method was first developed 50 years ago in Siberia & surgeons in the west began using it in the mid 1980s in leg lengthening procedures. Aberdeen Royal Infirmary's plastic surgery & orthopaedics departments will become the first in the UK to use the technique for hand surgery. A team of Russian specialists are to train the ARI surgeons.
