WOMAN AND TWO CHILDREN STABBED IN HOME

A woman & her two sons aged five & seven have been stabbed by an attacker at their home. Police were called to the house in Ilfracombe Devon early this morning. The 36-year-old mother suffered the worst injuries but they were described as not life threatening. The family were all taken to hospital. A man was seen running from the house towards nearby cliffs & a helicopter search for the attacker was launched.

A 28-year-old man was bundled into a car in Rathcoole Belfast and driven to New Mossley where he was shot in both legs. A second man was abducted by two men in a car in Carrickfergus & shot in the lower leg. And a 19-year-old youth was shot in both legs in north Belfast.

RAPIST JAILED FOR 10 YEARS FOR ATTACK

A West Lothian man who repeatedly raped a young mother in her home then attempted to murder her has been jailed for 10 years. The High Court in Edinburgh heard how Douglas Connell 21 watched his 19- year-old victim crawl to a neighbour's home for help after the attack. Lord Penrose described the attack as horrendous & of the "utmost gravity". Connell admitted repeatedly raping & attempting to murder the woman at her home last September.

SCHOOLS EVACUATED AFTER BOMBS FOUND

At least half a dozen improvised pipe bombs have been discovered on the roof of a primary school in a loyalist area of east Belfast. Some 160 pupils & staff from Beechfield Primary School and adjoining McArthur nursery school were evacuated to a nearby hall. Bomb disposal experts were called in when staff found one bomb on the roof. The experts then found five more apparently being stored on the roof.

DUP MAY STEP ASIDE IN CRUCIAL SEATS

The Democratic Unionist Party says it may not contest several constituencies held by opponents of the Good Friday peace agreement at the General Election Deputy leader Peter Robinson said to oppose the MPs in West Tyrone Belfast South & North Down may split the vote and elect pro-agreement candidates. The seats are held by William Thompson Martyn Smyth & Robert McCartney. A deal may be made in Fermanagh & South Tyrone where Ken Maginnis is retiring.

SICK PUPPY SAVED AFTER KNIFE SWALLOWING

A puppy has had surgery to remove a 15- inch bread knife he swallowed as his family prepared Christmas dinner. An X-ray showed the knife was almost as long as Kyle an 18-inch six-month-old collie-Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross owned by Eva Oliver of Leeds. The operation took an hour & Kyle is recovering at an animal hospital. "Dogs eat things all the time but I have never seen anything like this in a dog " said vet Dr Ann Draper.

HOSPITALS ADMIT TO GIVING AWAY ORGANS

Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool has admitted giving organs from living children to a drugs company which donated cash to its cardiac department. Thymus glands taken in heart operations were given to drugs company Aventis Pasteur for research from 1991 to 1993. Birmingham Children's Hospital says it also gave them to an unnamed firm in the early 1990s & received a cash sum A probe is under way at both hospitals into removal of dead babies' organs.

MINERS The first advertising campaign to recruit miners in Scotland in 20 years has been unveiled. Longannet Mine in Fife is looking for 130 staff after a Government cash injection of £17.7m. MUSIC Spice Girl Mel C has been forced to cancel her UK & Ireland solo tour due to start on Sunday because of a throat infection. She hopes to reschedule the dates in May.

MINI-RESHUFFLE AFTER MANDELSON RESIGNS

Energy minister Helen Liddell is taking up her new duties as Scottish Secretary after her predecessor John Reid was appointed to the N Ireland office. Foreign Office minister Peter Hain is to replace Ms Liddell at the Department of Trade & Industry. Mr Hain will be replaced by Scottish Office minister Brian Wilson. A replacement for Mr Wilson will be announced later today Downing Street has said.

ARMY WARNS CAMPERS AGAINST DIGGING LOO

A new guide to camping on Dartmoor has been scrapped because the Army feared advice on going to the toilet could result in campers blowing themselves up The National Park Authority had advised digging a hole for disposal. In the past there has been live firing across the moor & the Army warned such digging might detonate a shell. The Dartmoor Preservation Association says it is a damning indictment of the dangers of military training.

UK TROOPS EXTEND SIERRA LEONE TRAINING

The Government has announced plans to extend British troops' training of the Sierra Leonean army by eight months until the end of September. Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon said the move would help make the West African state's army "self-sufficient". The British military presence will remain at around 600 at any time. British troops have made an "important contribution to stability in Sierra Leone" Mr Hoon added.

SOLDIER CRITICAL AFTER SHOOTING IN BASE

A soldier has been critically injured in a shooting inside an Army base in Northern Ireland. A corporal was walking through Ballykelly base County Londonderry yesterday when a single shot was fired. The army confirmed that the bullet was not discharged from outside the camp. Shooting practice had been taking place earlier but no firing was going on when the soldier employed as a chef was hit. An RUC investigation is under way.

REID HAS TALKS WITH N IRELAND MINISTERS

New Northern Ireland Secretary John Reid has had his first formal meeting with First Minister David Trimble & Deputy First Minister Seamus Mallon. After the hour-long talks at Stormont Mr Trimble said there was "a window of opportunity" to resolve decommissioning and policing issues before an election. It would not take "much more progress" to "bed down" the peace deal he added. But Mr Mallon was less upbeat saying that "very substantial" work was needed
