TORIES WANT ENERGY MINISTER TO QUIT CND

Energy minister Peter Hain has refused to quit anti-nuclear group CND after Tories accused him of double standards. Shadow trade & industry secretary David Heathcoat-Amory demanded the new minister quit CND or give up anything to do with the nuclear industry. But Mr Hain said he had no intention of quitting the pressure group. He said he was "100% behind" Labour's energy policy but admitted Government policy was at odds with that of CND.

HEAVY SWELL DELAYS BID TO FLOAT TANKER

Heavy seas are delaying attempts to refloat the stricken oil tanker off the Galapagos islands. Ecuadorean navy divers working to attach cables to the tanker to refloat it will not now try to tow it away until Friday. About 1m litres of oil & diesel fuel have spilled into the sea. The Ecuadorean government has begun legal proceedings against the captain crew & owners of the tanker.

HINDUJA DENIES DOME GIFT BOUGHT FAVOURS

Indian tycoon Srichand Hinduja has denied asking for political favours in return for British citizenship. "I have not asked anybody to give any favour to me whether it is Peter Mandelson or anybody else " he said. Mr Mandelson resigned as N Ireland Secretary over claims he intervened to help Mr Hinduja who donated £1m to the Dome to secure a UK passport. Speaking in India Mr Hinduja denied any link between the gift & passport.

MEN SHOT IN LEGS IN N IRELAND ATTACKS

Three men are being treated in hospital for gunshot wounds after paramilitary- style shootings in Northern Ireland. A 28-year-old man was bundled into a car in Rathcoole Belfast and driven to New Mossley where he was shot in both legs. A second man was abducted by two men in a car in Carrickfergus & shot in the lower leg. And a 19-year-old youth was shot in both legs in north Belfast.

ROCK GUITARIST IS PRESERVED AS DINOSAUR

US scientists have discovered a new dinosaur in Madagascar ` with a little help from Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler. The Utah University team named the 70m- year-old two-metre-long bucked-teeth dinosaur Masiakasaurus Knopfleri. Researchers said they were inspired by Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler. "Whenever we played Knopfler's music we tended to find more fossils of this creature & it became a running joke " said team member Scott Sampson.

EVENTS MARK 100 YEARS SINCE VERDI DEATH

Italy is starting a year of events to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of opera composer Giuseppe Verdi. As well as celebrating his music Italy will remember the central role Verdi played in uniting the country. His music will be performed in other countries throughout the weekend. The Pope has paid tribute to the composer describing his works as "expressing great values linked to the Christian liturgy".

MIRACLE ESCAPE CESSNA HIT MOUNTAIN PEAK

Four people had a miracle escape from a crash ` even though their light plane smashed into a mountain top. The aircraft disappeared from the radar screen in bad weather at about 1.30pm. The crash is the second in Scotland involving a Cessna in recent weeks. A plane with two people on board went missing in the Highlands en route to the Western Isles last month. The latest alert ` at 3 000 feet ` involved helicopters from RAF Lossiemouth RAF Boulmer & HMS Gannet

ELDERLY CARE PLANS IN "TOTAL CONFUSION"

The Scottish Executive has been accused of leaving its intentions for care for the elderly in complete confusion. Yesterday the Executive appeared to make a U-turn promising to bring in free personal care for all. The SNP called the statement a con trick and Tory health spokeswoman Mary Scanlon also criticised the move. She said: "This is a delaying tactic which has been acknowledged by Alzheimer's Scotland and care of the elderly is in total confusion."

SICK PUPPY SAVED AFTER KNIFE SWALLOWING

A puppy has had surgery to remove a 15- inch bread knife he swallowed as his family prepared Christmas dinner. An X-ray showed the knife was almost as long as Kyle an 18-inch six-month-old collie-Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross owned by Eva Oliver of Leeds. The operation took an hour & Kyle is recovering at an animal hospital. "Dogs eat things all the time but I have never seen anything like this in a dog " said vet Dr Ann Draper.

BISTRO CHAIN WITH RECEIVERS AFTER CRASH

The Pierre Victoire restaurant chain has gone into receivership ` for the second time. The current owners Edinburgh based firm Voila bought the restaurant chain from its founder Pierre Levicky when it went bust two year ago. The new owners today blamed their financial troubles on dramatic changes in the marketplace. The restaurants employ more than 150 staff across the UK ` with around 50 of them in Scotland.

FINGER TECHNIQUE POINTS THE WAY AHEAD

Surgeons in Aberdeen are studying a technique to "regrow" amputated fingers by stretching the bone. The Ilizarov method was first developed 50 years ago in Siberia & surgeons in the west began using it in the mid 1980s in leg lengthening procedures. Aberdeen Royal Infirmary's plastic surgery & orthopaedics departments will become the first in the UK to use the technique for hand surgery. A team of Russian specialists are to train the ARI surgeons.
