GP MISSED GIRL'S FOOTBALL-SIZED TUMOUR

A doctor who failed to spot a tumour the size of a football in a nine-year- old girl has been found guilty of serious professional misconduct. The child died after becoming violently ill at Dr Krishna Mohan Singh's surgery in Heston West London in 1999. Surgeons discovered the 10in wide tumour had displaced her kidney. The GMC also found Dr Singh guilty of failing to provide an adequate examination but he was not struck off.

A scheme aimed at attracting more GPs into deprived areas has been announced by Health Minister Susan Deacon. From April some family doctors will have the option of being salaried employees of the NHS instead of running their own surgeries. The changes are to help recruit & retain doctors in areas where GPs might not choose to set up practices. Five trials which have been running in Edinburgh Glasgow Aberdeen & Ayrshire are to be made permanent.

DOCTOR HELD AFTER HIDDEN CAMERA FOUND

A hospital doctor has been arrested after a camera was found hidden inside a shampoo bottle in a nurses' bathroom. The 27-year-old man is understood to be a senior house officer at St George's Hospital in Tooting south-west London. Male & female nurses who use the communal bathroom in halls of residence at Brighton General Hospital were said to be "very upset" by the find. Videotapes & technical equipment were also found in another nearby room.

LIDDELL MOVE SET TO SPARK WAR OF WORDS

New Scottish Secretary Helen Liddell is starting work at Dover House today ` a move which is set to spark a fresh war of words with the Scottish Nationalists Leader John Swinney has warned her move in the post-Mandelson mini reshuffle will lead to a continued "turf war" between London & Edinburgh. Peter Mandelson's Northern Ireland job was taken by ex-Scottish Secretary Dr John Reid ` who also starts work today. His deputy Brian Wilson has moved to the Foreign Office.

BISTRO CHAIN WITH RECEIVERS AFTER CRASH

The Pierre Victoire restaurant chain has gone into receivership ` for the second time. The current owners Edinburgh based firm Voila bought the restaurant chain from its founder Pierre Levicky when it went bust two year ago. The new owners today blamed their financial troubles on dramatic changes in the marketplace. The restaurants employ more than 150 staff across the UK ` with around 50 of them in Scotland.

DIABETES PREVENTION BREAKTHROUGH HOPES

Scientists say they are on the brink of a landmark discovery in preventing the onset of a type of diabetes. A team from Glasgow Royal Infirmary has discovered that drugs used to reduce the risk of heart attacks actually prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes. The researchers found that patients given pravastatin had a 30% reduced chance of developing diabetes. Type 2 diabetes often occurs in people over 45 & who are overweight. Scots are among the most likely to be hit.

BUSINESS EFFORT MAY CREATE JOBS ` CLAIM

Organisers of a get together for would- be entrepreneurs predict it could lead to 800 new firms ` creating 1 000 jobs. The event which is expected to draw a crowd of more than 4 000 is taking place at the SECC in Glasgow. Officials claim the Personal Enterprise Show is one of the biggest business start-up efforts held in Glasgow. Spokesman Jim O'Connor remarked that: "Starting a firm for yourself can for most people be both & exciting & a daunting prospect."

MENTAL HEALTH SHAKE-UP PLANS OUTLINED

Proposals for a radical shake-up of Scotland's mental health laws have been unveiled. Among the key changes in more than 100 proposals are provision for compulsory treatment of patients in the community. Compulsory treatment is recommended for use as a last resort & be linked to a patient care plan. A new independent tribunal is to be set up to consider compulsory measures. Some of the laws to be changed have not been looked at since the 1950s.

POLICE ISSUE POISONOUS ALCOHOL WARNING

Police have warned that a quantity of alcohol stolen from a pub in Uphall in West Lothian may be poisonous. A spokesman said that some of the cases of beer spirits & liqueurs taken from Ryan's Bar were damaged in a fire and could now be toxic. A quantity of crates including Glayva Drambuie & vodka as well as Budweiser & Miller beers were taken. Police warn that buying the booze would be a criminal offence as well as a danger to health.

NEW ALZHEIMER DRUGS BACKED BY WATCHDOG

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence has given its backing to three new drugs which delay the progression of Alzheimer's Disease. People with mild to moderate forms of the disease should be given Aricept Exelon or Reminyl on the NHS in England and Wales the Government body said. The drugs had previously been denied to some patients on the grounds of cost. It is thought the decision could cost

NEW WORKPLACE GUIDELINES FOR NHS STAFF

Health minister Susan Deacon has announced plans to make NHS managers deliver family-friendly policies & crack down on workplace bullying. The minister explained six new guidelines to improve working conditions for NHS employees during a conference in Edinburgh. The guidelines included proposals to improve training & strengthen equal opportunities policies. They seek to develop facilities for unions & monitor staff performance.
