NEARLY 30m HINDUS BATHE IN THE GANGES

Some 27m devout Hindus have bathed in India's holy River Ganges at the climax of a six-week religious festival. Hindus believe a bathe at the legendary meeting place of the Ganges Yamuna & lost Saraswati rivers absolves sin ends reincarnation & leads to Nirvana The new moon marks the most auspicious day of the 42-day festival in Allahabad on the flood plains of the Ganges. The 27m total could make this the biggest gathering of humanity recorded.

In an interview with the Hartlepool Mail he said: "I want to concentrate on being a good constituency MP for this town & the people." Indian tycoon Srichand Hinduja has denied asking for political favours in return for British citizenship. "I have not asked anybody to give any favour to me whether it is Peter Mandelson or anybody else " he said. Mr Mandelson resigned as N Ireland Secretary over claims he intervened to help Mr Hinduja who donated £1m to the Dome to secure a UK passport. Speaking in India Mr Hinduja denied any link between the gift & passport.

GOVT URGED TO REMAIN FOCUSED ON PEACE

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams has urged the Government not to allow Peter Mandelson's resignation to distract it from the search for peace in N Ireland. Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble praised Mr Mandelson in the Commons. He said his work in Northern Ireland had been appreciated by many people. The Democratic Unionist Party said few tears would be shed for Mr Mandelson who "refused to recognise" it spoke for the majority of the unionist community.

MICRA PRODUCTION SECURES 10 YEARS' WORK

Production of the Nissan Micra model boosted by a £40m Government grant will begin in December 2002 and secure work in Sunderland for up to 10 years. The UK plant has been named the most productive car factory in Europe for three years running. Opened in 1986 it is the UK's largest car-maker employing 5 000 workers. Nissan suppliers employ thousands more people on Wearside & this brings in #400m a year to the local economy.

"STEEP LEARNING CURVE" FOR NI SECRETARY

New Northern Ireland Secretary Dr John Reid admits he has a "great deal to learn" but has pledged to make sure the Good Friday Agreement is implemented. Arriving at his Stormont offices Dr Reid said he would be initially trying to learn his way into the new job. But he would do "everything possible to ensure the agreement is carried forward to the stage the people want to see". Helen Liddell says she is "humbled" to be the first woman Scottish Secretary.

SENIOR TORY CALLS FOR CURB ON ABORTION

Shadow health secretary Dr Liam Fox has called for a "huge restriction if not abolition" of abortion it is reported. The senior Conservative is thought to have urged a shortening of the 24-week limit on terminations. He asks Tories to pray for change in the Conservative Christian Fellowship prayerbook The Independent reports. Dr Fox reportedly said they should ask God for "a huge restriction of our pro-abortion laws".

TORIES WANT ENERGY MINISTER TO QUIT CND

Energy minister Peter Hain has refused to quit anti-nuclear group CND after Tories accused him of double standards. Shadow trade & industry secretary David Heathcoat-Amory demanded the new minister quit CND or give up anything to do with the nuclear industry. But Mr Hain said he had no intention of quitting the pressure group. He said he was "100% behind" Labour's energy policy but admitted Government policy was at odds with that of CND.

BMW STAFF ACCEPT PAY DEAL TO BUILD MINI

Workers at BMW have voted to accept a new two-year pay deal. The staff at BMW's Cowley plant in Oxfordshire are to build the new Mini. The German firm had described the deal as the best in the UK motor industry for the past 12 months giving pay rises of at least 10% over two years. The deal involving more flexible shift patterns had previously been rejected by a narrow margin but union leaders urged workers to agree to it.
