GOVT URGED TO REMAIN FOCUSED ON PEACE

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams has urged the Government not to allow Peter Mandelson's resignation to distract it from the search for peace in N Ireland. Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble praised Mr Mandelson in the Commons. He said his work in Northern Ireland had been appreciated by many people. The Democratic Unionist Party said few tears would be shed for Mr Mandelson who "refused to recognise" it spoke for the majority of the unionist community.

PARTY TAX BATTLE REACHES DISNEY HEIGHTS

The Conservative Party's plans for an #8bn tax cut are "an insult to Mickey Mouse" Tony Blair's office has said. An official said they had a "back of the envelope feel to them" & described them as a "joke". But shadow chancellor Michael Portillo insisted the Tories could still reach spending targets on health transport defence & the police. He promised to match Labour's pledges in all these areas.

GERMANY QUESTIONS US "STAR WARS" PLANS

US plans for a National Missile Defence system which have drawn protests from Russia & China have now been publicly questioned by Germany. Defence Minister Rudolf Scharping told a German newspaper that it was "completely unclear" how much NMD would cost or how effective it would be. Mr Scharping said the US should consult the EU more on defence & take account of Russian anti-missile proposals. Russia opposes NMD as it goes against a 1972 treaty on limiting such systems.

GOVERNMENT EXPANDING VOCATIONAL GCSEs

Around 40 000 extra pupils will study for a vocational GCSE qualification from next year Education Secretary David Blunkett has said. The £38m scheme would help cure the "British disease" of neglecting practical skills he said. New courses will include engineering construction & information technology At present about 50 000 children study for vocational GCSEs. It is hoped they will lead to apprenticeships.

British Airways flight attendant Kerry Weston 21 of Broxbourne Herts has been found dead in a Nairobi hotel room. She was found on January 18 & believed to have died of natural causes AUSTRALIA The Australian Cricket Board says batsman Mark Waugh will be dropped from the national team if he continues to refuse to talk to investigators probing betting & match-fixing claims ITALY Vets are examining the suspected second case of mad cow disease since 1994 the Health Ministry said. The first was confirmed last week.

MENTAL HEALTH SHAKE-UP PLANS OUTLINED

Proposals for a radical shake-up of Scotland's mental health laws have been unveiled. Among the key changes in more than 100 proposals are provision for compulsory treatment of patients in the community. Compulsory treatment is recommended for use as a last resort & be linked to a patient care plan. A new independent tribunal is to be set up to consider compulsory measures. Some of the laws to be changed have not been looked at since the 1950s.

NI HOMES HIT BY GUN AND BOMB ATTACKS

Several homes in Northern Ireland have been targeted in bomb & gun attacks. In Belfast a pipe bomb was thrown into a house off the the Limestone Road in the north of the city. It exploded causing damage but no injuries. Shots were fired at another house in the Ardoyne area of the city. Again no injuries were reported. Two more pipe bombs were thrown through house windows at Kinnard Park in Garvagh County Londonderry.

"STEEP LEARNING CURVE" FOR NI SECRETARY

New Northern Ireland Secretary Dr John Reid admits he has a "great deal to learn" but has pledged to make sure the Good Friday Agreement is implemented. Arriving at his Stormont offices Dr Reid said he would be initially trying to learn his way into the new job. But he would do "everything possible to ensure the agreement is carried forward to the stage the people want to see". Helen Liddell says she is "humbled" to be the first woman Scottish Secretary.

Qs UPROAR OVER THE MANDELSON AFFAIR

Tony Blair has said Peter Mandelson is "a bigger man than many of his critics" during furious Commons exchanges with Opposition leader William Hague. During Prime Minister's Question Time he said Mr Hague had "lived down to my expectations" in his comments. Mr Hague said the PM made a "monumental error of judgment" restoring Mr Mandelson to Government after 10 months He then had to sack the same minister twice for the same offence he said.

NISSAN TO BOOST CAR PRODUCTION IN UK

A decision by Japanese car giant Nissan to build a new Micra model at its Sunderland plant will create 500 new jobs & safeguard hundreds more. The Prime Minister said it was "a great day for the North & for the country". Nissan President Carlos Ghosn said #235m would be invested in Sunderland boosting production from 330 000 cars a year to 500 000. It had earlier been feared Nissan would move some car production to France.

FEARS RAISED OVER EC PLANS FOR FOOTBALL

Up to 10 football league clubs in Scotland could go bankrupt within five years if the present transfer system is abolished a Scottish MP has warned. Labour MP for Eastwood Jim Murphy is to use a special debate at Westminster to outline the dangers of European plans. The European Commission wants football players to have the same rights as other workers including being able to end a contract by giving notice. Mr Murphy fears clubs would lose out on transfer fees & end youth schemes.

Peter Mandelson has pledged to remain in politics & fight on as a constituency MP. In an interview with the Hartlepool Mail he said: "I want to concentrate on being a good constituency MP for this town & the people." He resigned as N Ireland Secretary over claims he helped an Indian tycoon who gave £1m to the Dome get a UK passport The Tories are demanding that he should leave Westminster altogether.
