ITALIAN POLICE SEIZE SUSPECT BEEF

Police in southern Italy seized 330kg of beef & other meat in a clampdown after the first cases of BSE there. They said that the papers accompanying the consignment had been fradulently altered to suggest that the meat originated in Italy instead of France. Italy had previously banned imports of beef from France after several cases of Mad Cow Disease were reported there. The clampdown also led to the seizure of 1 600 tons of sheep feed found to contain banned animal bonemeal.

EGG ON FACE IN FRANCE-TURKEY SPAT

Senior Turkish politicians threw eggs at the French embassy as part of a protest over French recognition of the Turkish "genocide" of Armenians. Anatolia news agency said the deputy leader of the BBP party had led a march to the embassy on Paris Street in Ankara and demonstrated outside. Party officials were held back from the embassy by police and left after they were stopped from throwing eggs. Turkey is now considering a draft law accusing France of genocide in Algeria.

NISSAN TO BOOST CAR PRODUCTION IN UK

A decision by Japanese car giant Nissan to build a new Micra model at its Sunderland plant will create 500 new jobs & safeguard hundreds more. The Prime Minister said it was "a great day for the North & for the country". Nissan President Carlos Ghosn said #235m would be invested in Sunderland boosting production from 330 000 cars a year to 500 000. It had earlier been feared Nissan would move some car production to France.

FRENCH NO LONGER IMPORTANT IN TURKEY

Officials at Istanbul international airport say French businessmen can no longer use the fast-track VIP hall. The airport administration chief said only official guests of the Turkish government could now enjoy that perk. The move is a sign of Turkey's outrage over the French parliament vote to recognise as genocide the 1915 deaths of Armenians under the Ottoman empire. Turkey disputes the number of deaths and denies that the killings were part of a deliberate policy of genocide.

PENSION PROTESTS BRING FRANCE TO A HALT

Demonstrations throughout France in protest at proposals to raise the pension age to above 60 brought the country's transport system to a halt. Thousands of both private & public sector employees demanded the right to receive a pension at the age of 60 French Info radio reported. The protests affected rail air & municipal transport nationwide. Almost total paralysis was reported from Lille in the north to Marseilles on the Mediterranean coast.

ESCAPED PRISONERS IN HOTEL SURRENDER

The last two of seven escaped Texas prisoners have surrendered after barricading themselves in a motel room. Two men claiming to be rapist Patrick Murphy Jr & armed robber Donald Newbury were holed up in the Holiday Inn in Colorado Springs Colorado. Police feared they had rifles & shotguns but they gave up peacefully. Four members of the gang which broke out last month had been captured earlier & another had killed himself.

FOUR ACCUSED OF TRYING TO KILL REFUGEE

Four men have been charged with trying to kill a Turkish refugee who was left in a coma after a Christmas Eve attack. Cumali Sinankili faces permanent brain damage ` if he ever recovers ` after he was punched & kicked in the vicious assault in Bermondsey south London. Police say Mr Sinankili came to the UK in 1993 claiming political persecution. The four men all from Bermondsey & aged 19 to 23 have been charged with attempted murder & violent disorder.
