SEGA MAY GIVE IN TO SONY'S DOMINATION

Japanese electronics company Sega says it may stop producing its Dreamcast console because of overwhelming competition from the Sony Playstation. It is making heavy losses after sinking hundreds of millions of pounds into the machines which went on sale in 1999. Sony has about 65% of the global games market while Sega has less than 10%. A spokesman said Sega could concentrate on developing games for other companies' machines in future.

UK-based jobs with Lucent the world's biggest maker of telecommunications equipment are under threat after it announced it is shedding 10 000 posts. The company which has 107 000 staff worldwide lost £696m in the first three months of its financial year. A spokeswoman said about 1 000 jobs were expected to go in Europe. But it is not yet known how that will affect Lucent's staff at Malmesbury & Swindon in Wilts and Ascot in Berks.

700 JOBS TO GO AT COMMUNICATIONS FIRM

A communications firm is axing 700 jobs ` less than a year after it recruited an extra 2 000 workers to cope with the boom in internet services. Nortel is shedding the jobs at its factory in Paignton which makes fibre- optic components for the web industry. The workforce grew to 5 500 last year but the company has had to "review its resources" due to a competitive market. All those being laid off are on short part-time fixed-term contracts.

TOURISTS "PAY TOO MUCH FOR INSURANCE"

Holidaymakers are paying up to four times the necessary amount for travel insurance according to a study. Up to 60% of the money paid in travel insurance premiums goes to travel agents as commission financial information firm Misys found. A family of four going to the US for two weeks were quoted £256 if they bought cover at one big UK operator. But a firm which paid less commission charged £61 & offered better cover.

BISTRO CHAIN WITH RECEIVERS AFTER CRASH

The Pierre Victoire restaurant chain has gone into receivership ` for the second time. The current owners Edinburgh based firm Voila bought the restaurant chain from its founder Pierre Levicky when it went bust two year ago. The new owners today blamed their financial troubles on dramatic changes in the marketplace. The restaurants employ more than 150 staff across the UK ` with around 50 of them in Scotland.

EXECUTIVE FACING ROADS REBELLION THREAT

A meeting of Labour MSPs has broken up without agreement on the row over road maintenance contracts. The Transport Minister Sarah Boyack is trying to head off a backbench revolt by up to 25 MSPs. They are angry over a move to award contracts valued at £350m to two private firms. Local councils have complained that the bidding system was not fair ` & that thousands of roads workers will lose their jobs.

BUILDER PLANS TO AXE 300 JOBS IN MERGER

Housebuilder Persimmon says it plans to make more than 300 redundancies as part of its £537.5m bid for Beazer Group. It will close 16 of the 40 regional offices that the enlarged group will have if the offer is successful. Persimmon's increased offer comes after a two-week takeover battle involving the four leading UK builders. A £535m bid for Taylor Woodrow by Bryant was launched on Monday scuppering Bryant-Beazer merger plans.

GIRL SUES OVER RUSSIAN ORPHANAGE ORDEAL

A 19-year-old Russian woman is suing local authorities in the Russian town of Nizhny Novgorod alleging she was mistreated in an orphanage. Natalya Pechenkina says the head of the orphanage starved the children forcing them to spend hours feeding pigs & chickens instead of going to school. The children also had to cook the meals and serve them to the orphanage staff. The woman who spent 11 years in the institution wants compensation & the right to continue her education.

STAFF ACTION WOULD HIT SCHOOLS ` HEADS

Schools will have to send pupils home for part of the week if teachers carry out industrial action over staffing shortages headteachers have warned. New guidelines drawn up by the National Association of Headteachers say teachers should cover vacancies. But teachers' union the NASUWT has said it will ballot its London members on plans for a city-wide "no cover" action The NAHT said this would "hit the wrong target" and would damage schools.

GAY COUPLE LOSE "EU RIGHT" TO BE FAMILY

A gay couple have lost a High Court battle to live in Britain as "a family" under European law. Belfast-born Nigel McCollum challenged the Immigration Service's refusal to let his Brazilian partner Renato Lozano into the UK as his same-sex spouse. His lawyer said this impeded Mr McCollum's right of free movement. Mr Justice Turner refused a judicial review. He said neither UK nor EU law made the couple a family.

LITERARY WORLD BIDS FAREWELL TO WAUGH

Hundreds have paid their last respects to critic & satirist Auberon Waugh. The writer died in his sleep last week aged 61. He was buried at the church of St Mary in Bishop's Lydeard Somerset. Private Eye historian Patrick Marnham said the Daily & Sunday Telegraph & Private Eye columnist would have been surprised by the grief & tributes. Daily Telegraph editor Charles Moore Eye founder Richard Ingrams & Daily Mail writer Nigel Dempster attended.
