DOUBT OVER SPIRITUAL MOVEMENT "SUICIDE"

Five members of the Falungong spiritual movement have set themselves alight in Tiananmen Square Beijing according to the official Chinese news agency. It said one had died & others had been taken to hospital. But a Hong Kong-based Falungong spokesman said the report was doubtful and suggested it was a government attempt to discredit the movement. Its protests have been peaceful until now the BBC Beijing correspondent said

GAY COUPLE LOSE "EU RIGHT" TO BE FAMILY

A gay couple have lost a High Court battle to live in Britain as "a family" under European law. Belfast-born Nigel McCollum challenged the Immigration Service's refusal to let his Brazilian partner Renato Lozano into the UK as his same-sex spouse. His lawyer said this impeded Mr McCollum's right of free movement. Mr Justice Turner refused a judicial review. He said neither UK nor EU law made the couple a family.

DNA CHECKS ON 2 000 MEN IN RAPE INQUIRY

Detectives are to take DNA swabs from up to 2 000 men in the latest attempt to find the so-called Bath Rapist. Police have isolated a DNA sample from the man they believe is responsible for at least 14 attacks on women in & around the city over the past decade. The hunt for the attacker ` Operation Eagle ` is the largest ongoing investigation of its kind in Britain. Swabs are to be taken from men whose names have come up during the inquiry.

PINOCHET FACING CHILEAN INTERROGATION

Ex-Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet is to be interrogated over alleged crimes committed during his years in power. Questioning by Judge Juan Guzman comes just over a week after medical tests aimed at assessing whether Pinochet is fit to stand trial. He is to be questioned on what he knew about a military squad which killed more than 70 political prisoners. The squad has become known in Chile as the caravan of death.

Former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet has denied all responsibility for political murders by military death squads after he took power in 1973. Radio Cooperativa said Pinochet was being questioned by Judge Juan Guzman about the "Caravan of Death" murders. The "caravan" toured Chile killing a large number of political opponents. "On being questioned concerning the crimes by the squad Pinochet's exact response was 'I am not responsible for that' " the radio report said.

FRENCH NO LONGER IMPORTANT IN TURKEY

Officials at Istanbul international airport say French businessmen can no longer use the fast-track VIP hall. The airport administration chief said only official guests of the Turkish government could now enjoy that perk. The move is a sign of Turkey's outrage over the French parliament vote to recognise as genocide the 1915 deaths of Armenians under the Ottoman empire. Turkey disputes the number of deaths and denies that the killings were part of a deliberate policy of genocide.

GP MISSED GIRL'S FOOTBALL-SIZED TUMOUR

A doctor who failed to spot a tumour the size of a football in a nine-year- old girl has been found guilty of serious professional misconduct. The child died after becoming violently ill at Dr Krishna Mohan Singh's surgery in Heston West London in 1999. Surgeons discovered the 10in wide tumour had displaced her kidney. The GMC also found Dr Singh guilty of failing to provide an adequate examination but he was not struck off.

STOCK EXCHANGE APPOINTS FEMALE CHIEF

The London Stock Exchange has appointed the first female chief executive in its 200-year history. Canadian-born Clara Furse a 43-year- old businesswoman will take on the role the Stock Exchange confirmed. She will take charge of the Exchange after a period of turmoil. The post ` considered the toughest job in the City ` fell vacant in September when the Exchange abandoned a merger with its German counterpart.

DETECTIVES HAIL NEW SARAH PAYNE CLUE

Police probing the murder of schoolgirl Sarah Payne say they have a new clue. A blue & white striped curtain dotted with clowns is now being linked to the attack on the eight-year-old near East Preston West Sussex last year. Police say it had been used for another purpose or thrown out & want details about where it had been used or seen. Sarah from Hersham Surrey was found dead near Pulborough West Sussex two weeks after her July 1 disappearance.

UGANDA TACKLES CHILD LABOUR PROBLEM

The government in Uganda is holding a conference to address the problem of the country's 3m child labourers. Ministers & union officials were told that orphans whose parents had died in the Aids epidemic were a potentially limitless supply of cheap labour. Labour minister Philemon Mateke said most of the exploited children were hidden away in illegal workshops. And many families send their children to work instead of school because they depend on the children to sustain them.

COURT GIVES TWINS' REAL FATHER CUSTODY

An American judge has awarded custody of the twins adopted via the internet to their biological father in the US. A court in St Louis Missouri decided Aaron Wecker should have the girls rather than their mother Tranda Wecker. But the order has no immediate effect because they are currently in the care of Flintshire County Council in Britain Adoptive parents Alan & Judith Kilshaw are contesting the council's decision to take the twins into care.

DOMESTIC ABUSE LAWS SET TO BE TIGHTENED

MSPs will today be asked to give the green light to laws protecting former spouses from domestic abuse. The planned laws extend the Matrimonial Homes Act 1981 which aimed to protect women from eviction or violence & intimidation from their partners. The protection afforded did not extend beyond spouses or partners with occupancy rights leaving many people including divorcees vulnerable. The Executive has indicated it wants to beef up existing provision.

KOREAN POST ENTERS NEW YEAR SPIRIT

The Korean Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications has issued a new stamp to celebrate the Lunar New Year. "Against a background of the fluttering red flag are drawn heavy industrial establishments & modern military hardware " KCNA news agency said. "Pictured on the lower part is a pine tree symbolic of the Koreans' stamina." "The stamp represents the spirit & will of the Korean people advancing to the final victory of the revolution under the red flag of Socialism."

HILLWALKERS LEFT NO DETAILS OF ROUTE

Two hillwalkers who have been missing in the Ochill hills have been found and flown to Stirling Royal Infirmary. Police mountain rescue teams & an RAF helicopter were involved in the search for Robert Rose & Carol MacInally who went missing overnight. Police said they were equipped with walking boots & wet weather gear but did not leave details of their route. Mr Rose 63 is from Tullibody & Ms MacInally 50 is from Coalsnaughton both Clackmannanshire.

JONATHAN KING RE-ARRESTED IN SEX PROBE

Pop impresario Jonathan King has been re-arrested questioned & released on bail police have said. It has emerged that Surrey officers arrested Mr King yesterday as part of their ongoing sex claims inquiry. He was bailed in November on three charges dating back to the early 1970s. The allegations refer to a sex offence against a boy under 16 indecently assaulting a male and trying to commit a sex offence against a male under 21.
