USA Miami couple who disciplined their

11-year-old son by ripping off his toenails dropping a sledgehammer on his feet & making him eat his own vomit have been imprisoned for life. SPAINA law has come into force which may lead to the expulsion of around 30 000 illegal residents in a bid to stem the tide of illegal immigration. JAPAN Economics Minister Fukushiro Nukaga has become the latest cabinet member to resign after admitting taking around £70 000 from an insurance company involved in a scandal.

SEGA MAY GIVE IN TO SONY'S DOMINATION

Japanese electronics company Sega says it may stop producing its Dreamcast console because of overwhelming competition from the Sony Playstation. It is making heavy losses after sinking hundreds of millions of pounds into the machines which went on sale in 1999. Sony has about 65% of the global games market while Sega has less than 10%. A spokesman said Sega could concentrate on developing games for other companies' machines in future.

UK JOBS AT RISK AS LUCENT SHEDS 10 000

UK-based jobs with Lucent the world's biggest maker of telecommunications equipment are under threat after it announced it is shedding 10 000 posts. The company which has 107 000 staff worldwide lost £696m in the first three months of its financial year. A spokeswoman said about 1 000 jobs were expected to go in Europe. But it is not yet known how that will affect Lucent's staff at Malmesbury & Swindon in Wilts and Ascot in Berks.

You can move to the next day or to the previous day by using the Date Navigation Bar.


On any particular day, you can see what else happened on that day by using the "What Else Happened on this Day" navigation bar. This will take you through all the available data for the selected day.


Alternatively, you can get a list of some of the main items featured in a particular month by clicking on the MONTH tab above and you will find a clickable list of the month's events from which to choose.


Om the main panel you will see the current note in the centre and the keywords associated with it in the tabs at the top of the panel.
