RALLY DRIVER'S WIDOW IN CRUCIAL SURGERY

The critically ill widow of rally champion Bertie Fisher who died after a helicopter crash is to have surgery. Gladys Fisher is in intensive care at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast where son Roy 22 is also recovering. A helicopter carrying Mr Fisher & his family crashed near Enniskillen on Sunday afternoon. The former champion's son Mark 27 and daughter Emma 25 died instantly. Their funerals take place on Thursday.

A gay couple have lost a High Court battle to live in Britain as "a family" under European law. Belfast-born Nigel McCollum challenged the Immigration Service's refusal to let his Brazilian partner Renato Lozano into the UK as his same-sex spouse. His lawyer said this impeded Mr McCollum's right of free movement. Mr Justice Turner refused a judicial review. He said neither UK nor EU law made the couple a family.

NI HOMES HIT BY GUN AND BOMB ATTACKS

Several homes in Northern Ireland have been targeted in bomb & gun attacks. In Belfast a pipe bomb was thrown into a house off the the Limestone Road in the north of the city. It exploded causing damage but no injuries. Shots were fired at another house in the Ardoyne area of the city. Again no injuries were reported. Two more pipe bombs were thrown through house windows at Kinnard Park in Garvagh County Londonderry.

CLOSE RELATIONS WITH US "WILL CONTINUE"

Britain's close relationship with the US will continue under president George W Bush Robin Cook has said. "I was particularly encouraged by the echoes of our agenda & his for the US " the Foreign Secretary added. He welcomed Mr Bush's pledge to tackle common interests with its allies. "The talk of failed communities & tackling failed schools made him somebody who was actually going to try to forge a one-nation America " he said

DAMILOLA'S FATHER SLAMS "MORAL VALUES"

The father of murdered 10-year-old Damilola Taylor has told the BBC "moral values" in Britain need to change. Richard Taylor branded his son's killer's parents "irresponsible people" for not giving police any information. He also told Radio 4's Today programme he thought Damilola was stabbed to death in Peckham London in November for refusing to join a street gang. Tonight's BBC1's Crimewatch features a reconstruction of Damilola's movements.

CHHOKAR WITNESS IS GUILTY OF CONTEMPT

A witness in the murder trial of Indian waiter Surjit Chhokar has been found guilty of contempt of court. Ronnie Coulter 32 was found guilty at the High Court in Paisley after Lord Bonomy said his evidence was "evasive". The judge said Mr Coulter had been a crucial witness in the trial of Andrew Coulter 19 and David Montgomery 23. The pair were found not guilty of murder last year. Ronnie Coulter had been cleared of the murder at a previous trial.

COURT GIVES TWINS' REAL FATHER CUSTODY

An American judge has awarded custody of the twins adopted via the internet to their biological father in the US. A court in St Louis Missouri decided Aaron Wecker should have the girls rather than their mother Tranda Wecker. But the order has no immediate effect because they are currently in the care of Flintshire County Council in Britain Adoptive parents Alan & Judith Kilshaw are contesting the council's decision to take the twins into care.

JOB FEARS AS COMPANY CALLS IN RECEIVERS

There is concern over the future for 129 workers at a Glasgow buiscuit maker after the firm said it had called in receivers. Gray Dunn said difficult trading conditions & the loss of a major European customer has forced the move. The firm which has been making biscuits in the city for more than 145 years has had to shed 86 jobs. It is hoped that a buyer can found for the business which includes well known brands like Blue Riband.

FISCHER REPEATS EU INTEGRATION CALL

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has repeated his call for deeper European integration during a speech to a London audience. But he made no mention of the ideas he put forward last year of a European government with an elected president. And he said integration would not mean abolition of the nation state. Mr Fischer was speaking after receiving an award from the British-German Forum for his contribution to the Euro debate

USA Miami couple who disciplined their

11-year-old son by ripping off his toenails dropping a sledgehammer on his feet & making him eat his own vomit have been imprisoned for life. SPAINA law has come into force which may lead to the expulsion of around 30 000 illegal residents in a bid to stem the tide of illegal immigration. JAPAN Economics Minister Fukushiro Nukaga has become the latest cabinet member to resign after admitting taking around £70 000 from an insurance company involved in a scandal.

CHINESE POLICE HOLD DOVER LORRY SUSPECT

Police in China have arrested the head of a gang suspected of organising the smuggling racket which left 58 illegal immigrants dead in a lorry at Dover. Chen Xiaokong was caught in a disco in Fujian Province four days ago according to the Xinhua News Service. Xinhua said Mr Chen was a "snakehead" ` or illegal immigration broker. Customs officers found the 58 bodies in a sealed lorry container at Dover's Eastern Docks on June 19 last year.

PM ORDERS REVIEW OF UK PASSPORT BID

Tony Blair has ordered a review of the handling of businessman Srichand Hinduja's application for a UK passport He told the Commons he wanted the inquiry to ensure the application had been dealt with properly. The findings of Sir Anthony Hammond's review will be published. But the PM accepted Peter Mandelson's original statement on the passport row had been misleading & his resignation had been accepted on that basis.

UK JOBS AT RISK AS LUCENT SHEDS 10 000

UK-based jobs with Lucent the world's biggest maker of telecommunications equipment are under threat after it announced it is shedding 10 000 posts. The company which has 107 000 staff worldwide lost £696m in the first three months of its financial year. A spokeswoman said about 1 000 jobs were expected to go in Europe. But it is not yet known how that will affect Lucent's staff at Malmesbury & Swindon in Wilts and Ascot in Berks.
