SEX TRIAL HUSBAND KILLED WIFE ` VERDICT

An Aberdeen man accused of killing his wife during a sex act has been convicted of her culpable homicide. Niall McDonald had denied murdering his wife Mandy at their home in Westhill near Aberdeen last January by pressing her neck & assaulting her with a whip He was also found guilty of getting rid of her body & evidence and lying to police in order to conceal his crime. McDonald was released on bail & will be sentenced next month by the judge at the High Court in Forfar.

PINOCHET FACING CHILEAN INTERROGATION

Ex-Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet is to be interrogated over alleged crimes committed during his years in power. Questioning by Judge Juan Guzman comes just over a week after medical tests aimed at assessing whether Pinochet is fit to stand trial. He is to be questioned on what he knew about a military squad which killed more than 70 political prisoners. The squad has become known in Chile as the caravan of death.

DAMILOLA'S FATHER SLAMS "MORAL VALUES"

The father of murdered 10-year-old Damilola Taylor has told the BBC "moral values" in Britain need to change. Richard Taylor branded his son's killer's parents "irresponsible people" for not giving police any information. He also told Radio 4's Today programme he thought Damilola was stabbed to death in Peckham London in November for refusing to join a street gang. Tonight's BBC1's Crimewatch features a reconstruction of Damilola's movements.

SINGLE WITNESS "MAY END DAMILOLA HUNT"

The hunt for Damilola Taylor's killer could be over within days if a vital witness came forward police have said. More than 600 members of the public have been interviewed since the 10-year -old bled to death on a stairwell in Peckham south London eight weeks ago. Det Chf Insp Trevor Shepherd leading the inquiry said evidence suggested the killer "was in the system". He urged those caught up in the local gang culture to speak to police.

FRENCH NO LONGER IMPORTANT IN TURKEY

Officials at Istanbul international airport say French businessmen can no longer use the fast-track VIP hall. The airport administration chief said only official guests of the Turkish government could now enjoy that perk. The move is a sign of Turkey's outrage over the French parliament vote to recognise as genocide the 1915 deaths of Armenians under the Ottoman empire. Turkey disputes the number of deaths and denies that the killings were part of a deliberate policy of genocide.

CHHOKAR WITNESS IS GUILTY OF CONTEMPT

A witness in the murder trial of Indian waiter Surjit Chhokar has been found guilty of contempt of court. Ronnie Coulter 32 was found guilty at the High Court in Paisley after Lord Bonomy said his evidence was "evasive". The judge said Mr Coulter had been a crucial witness in the trial of Andrew Coulter 19 and David Montgomery 23. The pair were found not guilty of murder last year. Ronnie Coulter had been cleared of the murder at a previous trial.

COURT GIVES TWINS' REAL FATHER CUSTODY

An American judge has awarded custody of the twins adopted via the internet to their biological father in the US. A court in St Louis Missouri decided Aaron Wecker should have the girls rather than their mother Tranda Wecker. But the order has no immediate effect because they are currently in the care of Flintshire County Council in Britain Adoptive parents Alan & Judith Kilshaw are contesting the council's decision to take the twins into care.

SEX CASE WIFE'S FAMILY HAPPY AT VERDICT

The family of Mandy McDonald killed by her husband during sex say they are happy with the verdict ` after what had been a very difficult year. Det Chief Supt Sandy Kelman of Grampian Police said he was delighted with the outcome for the sake of family members. McDonald's lawyer said his client was very disappointed with the verdict and he would expect him to appeal against his conviction. The killer had insisted his wife had died accidentally.

SEARCH FOR QUAKE VICTIM CALLED OFF

Rescuers have called off the search for what could have been a survivor of the earthquake which shook Central America eight days ago. They had been holding out hope that the man may have survived nine days under a mudslide which hit the town of Las Colinas El Salvador. The rescuers had detected possible signs of life from under a building. The quake killed more than 700 people in El Salvador say local officials.

COHEN BLAMES COMMAND FOR YEMEN BOMBING

US Defence Secretary William Cohen says the entire military chain of command including himself was at fault over the bombing of a US warship in Yemen. He said commanders should have been more aggressive in anticipating the vulnerability terrorists might exploit. But he agreed with the US Navy's decision not to court-martial the captain of the USS Cole for negligence. A boat laden with explosives crashed into the Cole killing 17 sailors.

PINOCHET DENIES ALL IN INTERROGATION

Former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet has denied all responsibility for political murders by military death squads after he took power in 1973. Radio Cooperativa said Pinochet was being questioned by Judge Juan Guzman about the "Caravan of Death" murders. The "caravan" toured Chile killing a large number of political opponents. "On being questioned concerning the crimes by the squad Pinochet's exact response was 'I am not responsible for that' " the radio report said.

SPAINA law has come into force which may lead to the expulsion of around 30 000 illegal residents in a bid to stem the tide of illegal immigration. JAPAN Economics Minister Fukushiro Nukaga has become the latest cabinet member to resign after admitting taking around £70 000 from an insurance company involved in a scandal.

ESCAPED PRISONERS IN HOTEL SURRENDER

The last two of seven escaped Texas prisoners have surrendered after barricading themselves in a motel room. Two men claiming to be rapist Patrick Murphy Jr & armed robber Donald Newbury were holed up in the Holiday Inn in Colorado Springs Colorado. Police feared they had rifles & shotguns but they gave up peacefully. Four members of the gang which broke out last month had been captured earlier & another had killed himself.
