TORIES CALL FOR MANDELSON EXPLANATION

The Conservative Party has called for a full explanation of the Hinduja brothers' bid for a British passport. Downing Street has admitted that Peter Mandelson spoke briefly to the Home Office about the application. Shadow cabinet office minister Andrew Lansley said: "Jack Straw must provide a full account of who made the decision about the Hinduja brothers. "Peter Mandelson must also provide a full account of his involvement."

SENIOR TORY CALLS FOR CURB ON ABORTION

Shadow health secretary Dr Liam Fox has called for a "huge restriction if not abolition" of abortion it is reported. The senior Conservative is thought to have urged a shortening of the 24-week limit on terminations. He asks Tories to pray for change in the Conservative Christian Fellowship prayerbook The Independent reports. Dr Fox reportedly said they should ask God for "a huge restriction of our pro-abortion laws".

HATFIELD CRASH RAIL "BROKE INTO PIECES"

A section of rail in the Hatfield train crash broke into more than 300 pieces a report into the accident reveals. The Health & Safety Executive report says multiple cracks were present in the rail before the crash in October. It says all evidence pointed to the break-up of the rail being the cause of the crash in which four people died. There was no evidence of vandalism or driver error contributing to the cause of the crash the report adds.

The government has banned the import of food & raw materials which contain meat because of growing concern over Mad Cow disease in many countries. CZECH REPUBLICHealth officials fear a hallucinogenic ecstasy-like drug used by youngsters at raves in Poland may soon find its way across the border. Several million of the cheap pills known as Ufo have been produced at an illegal laboratory in southern Poland. ITALIAN POLICE SEIZE SUSPECT BEEF

Police in southern Italy seized 330kg of beef & other meat in a clampdown after the first cases of BSE there. They said that the papers accompanying the consignment had been fradulently altered to suggest that the meat originated in Italy instead of France. Italy had previously banned imports of beef from France after several cases of Mad Cow Disease were reported there. The clampdown also led to the seizure of 1 600 tons of sheep feed found to contain banned animal bonemeal.

FAMILY-OF-FOUR MURDER SUSPECTS FREED

A police officer & his former wife have been freed after they were told they would not be charged with the murders of a family of four. Mandy Power 34 was beaten to death with her children Katie 10 and Emily eight and mother Doris Dawson 80 at Clydach near Swansea. Sgt Steve Lewis & former Pc Alison Lewis were arrested six months ago. But there was not enough evidence for a prosecution case the CPS said.

CALIFORNIA PAYS £275m TO KEEP LIGHTS ON

The Governor of California has given the go-ahead for £275m of taxpayers' money to be used to prevent further electricity blackouts. The measure is a stop-gap bid to keep electricity flowing in the state as two big power providers face bankruptcy. The funds will be used to ensure lights stay on for the next couple of weeks. Firms are worried about the impact of the power cuts ` some in Silicon Valley may have to lay off staff if they go on

ERICSSON TO STOP MAKING MOBILE PHONES

Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson is to cease manufacturing mobile phones it has been announced. The world's third-largest mobile phone producer has reported a 75% rise in pre-tax profits but says the division making phones is making heavy losses. It has completed a deal which will see US firm Flexitronics handle supply & production of its mobile phones. Ericsson is to focus on technology & other parts of the business.

BLAIR PRAISES CLINTON PEACE COMMITMENT

Tony Blair has praised Bill Clinton's "unwavering commitment" to bringing peace to Northern Ireland as the US president prepares to leave office. Mr Clinton was a "very fine president" and "a very true friend to Britain" a spokesman for the Prime Minister said. George W Bush is being inaugurated as the new US president tomorrow. Foreign Secretary Robin Cook is set to visit Washington next month to meet new US Secretary of State Colin Powell.

MANDELSON QUITS AFTER PASSPORT ROW

Peter Mandelson is resigning as Northern Ireland Secretary but insists he has not acted improperly in any way. Mr Mandelson admitted discussing Dome sponsor Srichand Hinduja's passport application with a Home Office minister The announcement that he was quitting came after he had been called to talks with Tony Blair in Downing Street. In his last Commons appearance before formally resigning Mr Mandelson paid tribute to the work of the RUC.

MANDELSON ` I SHOULD HAVE BEEN CLEAR

Peter Mandelson accepted that he should have been clearer earlier on about his role in the Hinduja passport affair. He said he should have told the Observer that he & not an official had spoken to a Home Office minister. Mr Mandelson said he wanted to remove himself "from the countless stories & controversies of feuds & divisions" which had surrounded his career. "I want to lead a more normal life " he said before leaving Downing Street.
