CUBA ALLOWS CZECH PAIR PRISON VISIT

An embassy official in Cuba said that two Czechs arrested for spying 10 days ago were in good health in spite of "unpleasant" prison conditions. He was the first Czech official allowed to see ex-minister Ivan Pilip & former student leader Jan Bubenik since their arrest CTK news agency reported. Havana accuses the two of spying for the United States after they were discovered meeting Cuban dissidents. The Czech Republic last year accused Cuba of violating human rights.

SEX TRIAL HUSBAND KILLED WIFE ` VERDICT

An Aberdeen man accused of killing his wife during a sex act has been convicted of her culpable homicide. Niall McDonald had denied murdering his wife Mandy at their home in Westhill near Aberdeen last January by pressing her neck & assaulting her with a whip He was also found guilty of getting rid of her body & evidence and lying to police in order to conceal his crime. McDonald was released on bail & will be sentenced next month by the judge at the High Court in Forfar.

CLINTON ADVISERS IN LONDON FOR NI TALKS

Some of President Clinton's senior advisers are involved in trying to end an impasse over policing & decomissioning in Northern Ireland. A Downing Street spokesman confirmed officials led by US security adviser Jim Steinberg were in London for talks. Mr Steinberg was in Belfast last year for talks with all the parties. The White House team was also speaking to officials from Dublin Downing Street said.

TORIES CALL FOR MANDELSON EXPLANATION

The Conservative Party has called for a full explanation of the Hinduja brothers' bid for a British passport. Downing Street has admitted that Peter Mandelson spoke briefly to the Home Office about the application. Shadow cabinet office minister Andrew Lansley said: "Jack Straw must provide a full account of who made the decision about the Hinduja brothers. "Peter Mandelson must also provide a full account of his involvement."

GOVT DENIES MANDELSON PASSPORT CLAIMS

The Government has denied that Peter Mandelson "pulled strings" to help an Indian tycoon gain a UK passport. Tories have demanded an explanation over the Northern Ireland Secretary's involvement in Srichand Hinduja's case. He got a passport soon after loaning #1m to the Millennium Dome which Mr Mandelson was in charge of at the time. The Prime Minister's official spokesman said Mr Mandelson had merely referred Mr Hinduja's claim to the Home Office.

Mr Mandelson admitted discussing Dome sponsor Srichand Hinduja's passport application with a Home Office minister The announcement that he was quitting came after he had been called to talks with Tony Blair in Downing Street. In his last Commons appearance before formally resigning Mr Mandelson paid tribute to the work of the RUC.

BARAK WANTS OLD CITY "JOINTLY MANAGED"

Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Barak has said he wants to give Palestinians joint management of the daily running of the Old City of east Jerusalem. But he added that Israel would retain sovereignty over the occupied area. Mr Barak on an election visit to Tel Aviv said the Wailing Wall Mount of Olives & City of David would also remain under Israeli control. His comments came as negotiators held a third day of peace talks in Egypt.

NUCLEAR PLANT WORKERS VOTE FOR ACTION

Maintenance & process workers at the Dounreay nuclear plant in Caithness have voted for industrial action over a pay dispute. The workers who are members of the AEEU have rejected a 3% pay deal. The deal has already been accepted by the majority of the UK Atomic Energy Authority's workforce. The UKAEA pledged to continue talking to the union with the hope that the dispute could be concluded without the need for industrial action.
