A French rescue team is searching for what it believes could be a survivor of an earthquake that shook Central America eight days ago. They believe the man may be trapped in a mudslide which hit the town of Las Colinas El Salvador. The rescuers have detected sounds from under a mud-covered destroyed building which they say may be "signs of life". The quake killed more than 700 people in El Salvador say local officials.

Officials at Istanbul international airport say French businessmen can no longer use the fast-track VIP hall. Entrance fees to all national galleries and museums in England are to be scrapped the BBC has learned. The Government is to announce the move after Culture Secretary Chris Smith won a concession from the Treasury. Previously institutions which charged entrance fees would have faced high VAT bills when opening for free. The move safeguards institutions such as the National Gallery which feared it would have to introduce charges.

A 19-year-old Russian woman is suing local authorities in the Russian town of Nizhny Novgorod alleging she was mistreated in an orphanage. Natalya Pechenkina says the head of the orphanage starved the children forcing them to spend hours feeding pigs & chickens instead of going to school. The children also had to cook the meals and serve them to the orphanage staff. The woman who spent 11 years in the institution wants compensation & the right to continue her education.
