HEALTH EXPERTS DRAW UP NEW MMR STRATEGY

A meeting of medical experts called to try to restore confidence in the MMR vaccine has insisted there is no link to autism & bowel disease. Government Chief Medical Officer Prof Liam Donaldson said there would now be a new campaign to encourage parents to allow their children to be vaccinated. He said it was also important to pass on facts to health care professionals. But he stressed 88% of parents had already chosen to go ahead with the jab

GIRL SUES OVER RUSSIAN ORPHANAGE ORDEAL

A 19-year-old Russian woman is suing local authorities in the Russian town of Nizhny Novgorod alleging she was mistreated in an orphanage. Natalya Pechenkina says the head of the orphanage starved the children forcing them to spend hours feeding pigs & chickens instead of going to school. The children also had to cook the meals and serve them to the orphanage staff. The woman who spent 11 years in the institution wants compensation & the right to continue her education.

NEW ALZHEIMER DRUGS BACKED BY WATCHDOG

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence has given its backing to three new drugs which delay the progression of Alzheimer's Disease. People with mild to moderate forms of the disease should be given Aricept Exelon or Reminyl on the NHS in England and Wales the Government body said. The drugs had previously been denied to some patients on the grounds of cost. It is thought the decision could cost

MUSEUM AND GALLERY ENTRANCE TO BE FREE

Entrance fees to all national galleries and museums in England are to be scrapped the BBC has learned. The Government is to announce the move after Culture Secretary Chris Smith won a concession from the Treasury. Previously institutions which charged entrance fees would have faced high VAT bills when opening for free. The move safeguards institutions such as the National Gallery which feared it would have to introduce charges.

GOVT DENIES MANDELSON PASSPORT CLAIMS

The Government has denied that Peter Mandelson "pulled strings" to help an Indian tycoon gain a UK passport. Tories have demanded an explanation over the Northern Ireland Secretary's involvement in Srichand Hinduja's case. He got a passport soon after loaning #1m to the Millennium Dome which Mr Mandelson was in charge of at the time. The Prime Minister's official spokesman said Mr Mandelson had merely referred Mr Hinduja's claim to the Home Office.

SKILLS SHORTAGE "REACHES RECORD LEVELS"

Shortages of skilled workers have reached record levels in parts of British industry a new report claims. More than two out of three firms were being hit by a shortage of skilled staff according to a survey of 550 organisations by employment group Reed. The service sector reported record levels of skills shortages. The survey said firms in the Thames Valley East Anglia Northern Ireland and the Midlands were the worst hit.

KILSHAWS CONFIDENT OF GETTING CUSTODY

The couple who adopted twins via the internet but saw them taken away by social services say they are confident of winning custody of the baby girls. Alan & Judith Kilshaw of Buckley north Wales are due to attend a hearing in Birmingham tomorrow. The babies adopted after the couple paid a US broker £8 000 were taken into care by Flintshire County Council. Mrs Kilshaw denied newspaper reports she had been involved in witchcraft.

NUMBER OF CASES OF TB ON THE INCREASE

Cases of tuberculosis rose by more than 10% last year to the highest rate since 1983 according to official figures. Data from the Public Health Laboratory Service showed there were 6 797 cases of TB in England & Wales in 2000 compared to 6 144 in 1999. There has been a 34% rise in the lung disease since 1987. Experts said many victims had recently moved to the UK from places with high rates of the disease.
