"SURGEON SHOULD BE REPORTED TO GMC"

A plastic surgeon who operated on a woman who died after surgery on her nose should be reported to the General Medical Council an inquiry has heard. Ida Honeyman 58 from Perth died in March 1998 while having surgery for a blockage in her nose. Depute Fiscal Shona Waldron argued the surgeon Anas Naasan did not have the appropriate skills & experience. She told a fatal accident inquiry Mr Naasan could be prosecuted by the GMC committee of general medical practice.

CHALLENGE TO ROAD CONTRACT AWARDS FAILS

Legal action challenging the way the Scottish Executive has awarded major road contracts has failed. A consortium of local councils who had bid for a west of Scotland contract have been refused the right to appeal against dismissal of their action. This follows failed legal action by local authorities in the north east. It is expected all four major contracts will now go to private contractors. The Parliament's Transport Committee is expected to announce an inquiry.

MURDER INQUIRY AFTER MISSING TEEN FOUND

A murder inquiry has been launched after the body of a missing 18-year-old girl was discovered in a Plymouth flat. Supermarket worker Frances Nethercott from Plymstock near Plymouth failed to return home from work on Saturday sparking a police search of the area. Their inquiries led them to a rented flat in the city's Jennycliff area. Police say they want to talk to 31-year -old Steven Richards a manager at the store where Ms Nethercott worked.

GM CROP TRIALS HAVE "LEGITIMATE" ROLE

A Parliament report has said GM crop farm trials have a legitimate role to play in the development the technology. The Environment Committee's inquiry was prompted by a petition from Friends of the Earth which called for Parliament to ban GM crop trials altogether. It said a ban would contravene European directives but said it was concerned about thousands of acres sewn last year with GM contaminated seed. There was surprise at the lack of plans for dealing with such an incident.

DRIVE FOR CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE LAUNCHED

A drive to make better discipline in Scotland's classrooms a top priority has been launched by Education Minister Jack McConnell. Warning disruptive behaviour should be a concern for everyone he urged parents to work with schools to find ways of improving discipline. He made the call in Edinburgh where the first meeting was held today of a "task group" set up for that purpose. The group will look at existing priorities & consider improvements.

ANIMAL TESTS LAB SHARES SOAR AFTER DEAL

Shares in animal testing laboratory Huntingdon Life Sciences have soared after the firm clinched a rescue deal. The East Anglia firm's shares rose 66% when the stock market opened today. Its future was put in jeopardy when the Royal Bank of Scotland threatened not to extend its share of a £22.6m loan. The firm which was targeted by animal rights campaigners sealed an 11th hour deal backed by unnamed investors which saw the bank write off £11.6m.

EXECUTIVE AGREES TO AUDIT AT BISHOPTON

The Scottish Executive has agreed to hold an independent audit into the proposed closure of the Royal Ordnance Factory at Bishopton. Enterprise Minister Wendy Alexander has accepted a call from unions to have the National Audit Office investigate the viability of the plant. The 270 workers at the plant have spent the past two years living under the threat of closure. The Renfrewshire site makes missile propellant for the Ministry of Defence.

EMPTY PROMISES JIBE AFTER OAP CLIMBDOWN

Opposition parties insist pensioners have been offered empty promises by the Scottish Executive over long-term care. The Scottish National Party & the Conservatives are keeping up pressure after a climdown by minsiters. Labour's Tom McCabe outlined plans for free personal care ` just minutes ahead of an expected Holyrood defeat. Meanwhile Lib Dem Deputy First Minister Jim Wallace urged all MSPs to stick to their principles and stressed free care will be provided.
