Police have launched a murder inquiry after the discovery of a pensioner's body in Kirkcudbright yesterday. Archibald Jeffrey 82 was found on a riverside path just a few hundred yards from his home. HAMAS ADMITS IT ATTACKED ISRAELI TANK

The Islamic militant group Hamas has said it carried out a bomb attack on an Israeli tank in the Gaza Strip in which an Israeli soldier was seriously hurt. Hamas said the attack was in response to the Israeli arrest of a Palestinian woman suspected of luring an Israeli teenager to his death via the internet. It came as Palestinian & Israeli delegations resumed peace negotiations. The talks in the Egyptian resort of Taba could last as long as 10 days.

EMBRYO CLONING BILL FACES TEST IN LORDS

Peers have begun debating Government plans to allow the cloning of human embryos for research. Scientists claim so-called stem-cell research could help treat diseases such as Alzheimer's & Parkinson's. But many peers say the issue is being rushed without considering the ethical issues ` they could vote for research to be shelved pending a Lords inquiry. Religious leaders have also called for more time to weigh up moral concerns.

"SURGEON SHOULD BE REPORTED TO GMC"

A plastic surgeon who operated on a woman who died after surgery on her nose should be reported to the General Medical Council an inquiry has heard. Ida Honeyman 58 from Perth died in March 1998 while having surgery for a blockage in her nose. Depute Fiscal Shona Waldron argued the surgeon Anas Naasan did not have the appropriate skills & experience. She told a fatal accident inquiry Mr Naasan could be prosecuted by the GMC committee of general medical practice.

KILLER'S BROTHER JAILED FOR SEVEN YEARS

The brother of a former casino croupier who murdered & dismembered his wife has been jailed for seven years for helping to dispose of her body. Elliot Quy of Southport Merseyside helped his brother Mitchell dispose of his wife Lynsey's head & hand. A Liverpool Crown Court judge said Quy 22 embarked on a campaign of deceit by concealing the murder for 18 months. Mitchell Quy 25 was jailed for life for the murder last week.

ARRESTA 21-year-old man has been

arrested in connection with a break-in at the constituency office of Foreign Secretary Robin Cook in Livingston earlier this month. APPEAL Radio One's DJ Spoony is to appear on BBC1's Crimewatch on Wednesday in an appeal for information on the murder of Damilola Taylor. OCTOPUS Florence the octopus based at Fakenham Garden Centre Norfolk has had eight babies. Staff are expecting another 30 births if all the eggs laid before Christmas hatch.

MISSING CLIMBING PAIR DISCOVERED DEAD

Two hillwalkers who went missing in Angus last night have been found dead. John Cox 38 and 36-year-old Dennis Curran both of Dundee were discovered by RAF mountain rescuers in Glen Doll. The search for the men also involved the Tayside police mountain rescue team personnel from RAF Lauchars & civilian volunteers. The bodies of the men were discovered at the foot of "B" gully in Corrie Fee. It is thought the pair fell several hundred feet down the gully.

POLICE AIMING TO TACKLE RACIAL TENSION

Police across the UK are being told to draw up plans to prevent racial tension and violence spreading between asylum- seekers & local communities. An Association of Chief Police Officers manual obtained by BBC Radio Five Live warns of "significant public disorder" unless action is taken. Racial abuse towards refugees has become "common currency" it says. The British Refugee Council says harassment has become a daily problem.
