UK "PLAN TO MOVE NUCLEAR SUB BY MAY"

Britain has secretly told Spain it will remove disabled nuclear submarine HMS Tireless from Gibraltar by May 19 the the sub back to Britain if its cooling system can not be repaired it says. The Ministry of Defence refused to confirm or deny the plan. It told the newspaper it expected the sub to be repaired by March & that it would leave the port after that.

The Scottish Executive has agreed to hold an independent audit into the proposed closure of the Royal Ordnance Factory at Bishopton. Enterprise Minister Wendy Alexander has accepted a call from unions to have the National Audit Office investigate the viability of the plant. The 270 workers at the plant have spent the past two years living under the threat of closure. The Renfrewshire site makes missile propellant for the Ministry of Defence.

SICK TROOPS SENT TO PRIVATE HOSPITALS

Some troops are being sent to private hospitals for treatment because of a shortage of medical personnel in the armed forces it has emerged. The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts with Bupa & the Nuffield Hospital Group to provide treatment. Figures last July revealed a shortfall of over 25% in the number of medical personnel an MoD spokesman said. Only 6 153 of the 8 543 defence medical services posts were filled at that time

OIL SLICK THREATENS GALAPAGOS WILDLIFE

US pollution experts have arrived at the Galapagos Islands to prevent an oil spill causing an environmental disaster Sea lions pelicans & other birds have been affected after the oil tanker Jessica ran aground last Tuesday carrying almost 250 000 tonnes of oil. Ecuador asked for international help to stop the spill which covers an area of 460 square miles harming rare wildlife Environmental damage is "extremely grave" already a minister has said.

FRENCHWOMAN HEADS FOR FINAL FRONTIER

A French woman astronaut is in training in Moscow for a mission on a Russian spacecraft which will take her up to the new International Space Station. Claudie Andre-Deshays will join the ten-day flight in October aboard a new module which will serve as an emergency escape craft for the new space station. She has already been up to the Russian Mir space station in August 1996. "I dreamed of becoming an astronaut as a child when I watched the first man landing on the Moon on TV " she said.

TIGHTER BODY PIERCING CONTROLS MOOTED

The Scottish Executive is looking at tightening up the regulations on body piercing & tattooing. With very few controls on who can work as a piercer or on hygiene standards there is growing concern people could risk Hepatitis or HIV infections. The deputy minister for health Malcolm Chisholm has launched a consultation document to investigate the possibility of tighter rules. More than 200 skin piercing businesses operate in Scotland.

CHALLENGE TO ROAD CONTRACT AWARDS FAILS

Legal action challenging the way the Scottish Executive has awarded major road contracts has failed. A consortium of local councils who had bid for a west of Scotland contract have been refused the right to appeal against dismissal of their action. This follows failed legal action by local authorities in the north east. It is expected all four major contracts will now go to private contractors. The Parliament's Transport Committee is expected to announce an inquiry.

CAUSEWAY LEADS TO SURGE IN ISLAND CRIME

The opening of a causeway to a remote Scottish island has led to an unprecedented surge in crime. The link from the Hebridean community of Berneray to nearby North Uist was opened in April 1999. Last week thieves carried out what is thought to be the second break-in in the island's recorded history. The first took place nine months ago. Police believe the culprits used a pick-up stolen from nearby Benbecula.

ANIMAL TESTS LAB SHARES SOAR AFTER DEAL

Shares in animal testing laboratory Huntingdon Life Sciences have soared after the firm clinched a rescue deal. The East Anglia firm's shares rose 66% when the stock market opened today. Its future was put in jeopardy when the Royal Bank of Scotland threatened not to extend its share of a £22.6m loan. The firm which was targeted by animal rights campaigners sealed an 11th hour deal backed by unnamed investors which saw the bank write off £11.6m.

KIEV TO RETURN BACH ARCHIVE TO GERMANY

The Ukrainian government says it will return a collection of manuscripts by the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach & his sons to Germany. The archive which was taken by the Soviet Union's Red Army after the war was feared lost for over 50 years. It was found in Ukraine's state museum two years ago & musical scholars say it is priceless & irreplaceable. The decision to return it was announced to coincide with President Leonid Kuchma's current visit to Germany.

NUCLEAR PLANT WORKERS VOTE FOR ACTION

Maintenance & process workers at the Dounreay nuclear plant in Caithness have voted for industrial action over a pay dispute. The workers who are members of the AEEU have rejected a 3% pay deal. The deal has already been accepted by the majority of the UK Atomic Energy Authority's workforce. The UKAEA pledged to continue talking to the union with the hope that the dispute could be concluded without the need for industrial action.

NO TRIAL FOR BOY ACCUSED OF STABBING

An 11-year-old boy accused of stabbing a girl aged nine in Edinburgh will not face a court trial it has emerged. The young victim was abducted & knifed eight times in an underground car park near a cinema complex. The Crown Office has decided the case will be referred to the Children's Panel on advice from psychologists. The panel has the power to order the boy's detention in a secure unit or it can also release him into the care of social workers or his mother.

STUDENTS Oxford University has banned five students from attending lectures and sitting exams after refusing to pay their tuition fees. The five claimed the fees were "elitist & unfair". BOMB Police have warned animal & farm workers to handle mail with care after a pet supplier in Northumbria was sent a letter bomb. The bomb has yet not been linked to other incidents. PIPE Comedian Russ Abbot has followed luminaries such as Eric Morecambe & Dave Lee Travis by receiving the 2001 Pipesmoker of the Year award.
