BABY GIRL'S DEATH "SUSPICIOUS" ` POLICE

The death of a four-month-old girl is being treated as suspicious say police in Stoke-on-Trent. An ambulance & police were called to an address in Trafalgar Street in Hanley where they found the baby. She was taken to North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary but died soon after. A man & woman are helping detectives with their inquiries into the incident. A post-mortem examination is due to take place.

RESCUE TEAM FINDS HILL-WALKERS' BODIES

Two men who failed to return from a hill-walking expedition have been found dead by a rescue team. The experienced hill-walkers who were both in their 30s & from Dundee failed to return from a walk at Winter Corrie Glen Doll Angus yesterday. A Tayside Police mountain rescue team failed to find them in deteriorating weather last night. Their bodies were discovered by an RAF mountain rescue team.

MISSING CLIMBING PAIR DISCOVERED DEAD

Two hillwalkers who went missing in Angus last night have been found dead. John Cox 38 and 36-year-old Dennis Curran both of Dundee were discovered by RAF mountain rescuers in Glen Doll. The search for the men also involved the Tayside police mountain rescue team personnel from RAF Lauchars & civilian volunteers. The bodies of the men were discovered at the foot of "B" gully in Corrie Fee. It is thought the pair fell several hundred feet down the gully.

US TEAM HEADING FOR GALAPAGOS OIL SPILL

A US coastguard team is in the Galapagos Islands to help contain an oil spill threatening rare wildlife. The team will try to drain oil from the tanker Jessica which ran aground 800 metres offshore on Tuesday carrying almost 250 000 tonnes of oil. But bad weather is forecast which could make the clean-up effort more difficult and disperse oil more rapidly. The islands are famous for their giant tortoises & unique birds & plants.

HILLWALKERS LEFT NO DETAILS OF ROUTE

Two hillwalkers who have been missing in the Ochill hills have been found and flown to Stirling Royal Infirmary. Police mountain rescue teams & an RAF helicopter were involved in the search for Robert Rose & Carol MacInally who went missing overnight. Police said they were equipped with walking boots & wet weather gear but did not leave details of their route. Mr Rose 63 is from Tullibody & Ms MacInally 50 is from Coalsnaughton both Clackmannanshire.
