INTERNET FIRMS RECEIVE ADOPTION WARNING

UK internet service providers have been warned they may be prosecuted if they carry material breaking adoption laws. Health Minister John Hutton has written to providers warning that only local authorities & approved agencies may advertise children for adoption. It comes after a UK couple paid £8 000 to adopt US twins over the internet. Lawyers say it would be impossible for service providers to check all the material on their websites.

HEALTH EXPERTS DRAW UP NEW MMR STRATEGY

A meeting of medical experts called to try to restore confidence in the MMR vaccine has insisted there is no link to autism & bowel disease. Government Chief Medical Officer Prof Liam Donaldson said there would now be a new campaign to encourage parents to allow their children to be vaccinated. He said it was also important to pass on facts to health care professionals. But he stressed 88% of parents had already chosen to go ahead with the jab

SEARCH ON FOR BEST TEACHERS IN THE LAND

The search for the best teachers in England Wales & Northern Ireland is under way in the 2001 Teaching Awards. Nominations for the awards can be submitted by children or colleagues but they must be supported by the school. Lord Puttnam chairman of the awards' trustees said: "These awards celebrate the vital role teachers play in every community up & down the country." Nomination forms are available from the web site www.teachingawards.com.

EMBRYO CLONING BILL FACES TEST IN LORDS

Peers have begun debating Government plans to allow the cloning of human embryos for research. Scientists claim so-called stem-cell research could help treat diseases such as Alzheimer's & Parkinson's. But many peers say the issue is being rushed without considering the ethical issues ` they could vote for research to be shelved pending a Lords inquiry. Religious leaders have also called for more time to weigh up moral concerns.

GOVERNMENT URGED TO CUT GAS EMISSIONS

The Government has been urged to take "firm" action to limit greenhouse gas emissions after the gloomiest prediction yet on global warming. The United Nations has predicted a rise in average temperatures of between 1.4 and 5.8C from 1990 to 2100. Its 1995 estimate was of 1 to 3.5C. Friends of the Earth called for action to reduce the "terrifying" figures. A Government spokesman said it was aiming for a 20% emissions cut by 2010.

WOMAN DIES AFTER BEAUTY TREATMENT

A woman died in New Zealand after being treated with a beauty product designed to remove wrinkles & blemishes. The 57-year-old from Christchurch had a heart attack & died a few weeks later without regaining consciousness. The cosmetic preparation containing phenol a potentially dangerous chemical was supposed to remove the upper layers of facial skin. The beauty product was manufactured in Israel but did not have the New Zealand Ministry of Health's approval.

DOWN'S PARENTS FAILED BY AGENCY: REPORT

Children with Down's Syndrome are being denied the benefits to which they are entitled according to a new survey. Down's Syndrome Association research found 33% of children faced a long wait before living allowance claims were met by the Government's Benefits Agency. It also criticised "insensitive" & "ignorant" Benefits Agency staff. The Government agreed that there were sometimes delays but said efforts were being made to improve the situation.

DRIVE FOR CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE LAUNCHED

A drive to make better discipline in Scotland's classrooms a top priority has been launched by Education Minister Jack McConnell. Warning disruptive behaviour should be a concern for everyone he urged parents to work with schools to find ways of improving discipline. He made the call in Edinburgh where the first meeting was held today of a "task group" set up for that purpose. The group will look at existing priorities & consider improvements.
