BRITONS HELD IN JAPAN AFTER DRUGS FIND

Two Britons have been arrested at an airport in Japan on suspicion of smuggling 6 000 ecstasy tablets into the country the Foreign Office says. Craig Brandrick 26 and Cyleagh Brad Scott 21 were arrested on Christmas Eve in Osaka after drugs were found hidden in a double-bottomed suitcase. The pair live in South Africa but hold British & South African passports. They allegedly told officials they were promised £2 800 to smuggle in the drugs

An emergency summit is being held in the Angolan capital Luanda to discuss the impact of last week's assassination of Congolese President Laurent Kabila. The presidents of Angola Zimbabwe & Namibia ` key allies of Kabila ` are taking part in the talks. They provided him with weaponry & thousands of troops for his war against rebels backed by Rwanda & Uganda. The stance of Congo's new President Kabila's son Joseph remains unclear.

UK TROOPS EXTEND SIERRA LEONE TRAINING

The Government has announced plans to extend British troops' training of the Sierra Leonean army by eight months until the end of September. Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon said the move would help make the West African state's army "self-sufficient". The British military presence will remain at around 600 at any time. British troops have made an "important contribution to stability in Sierra Leone" Mr Hoon added.

On his last day in office President Clinton escaped a criminal indictment in the Lewinsky scandal by agreeing to admit giving misleading testimony. He admitted he "did not fully" tell the truth in talking about Lewinsky in the Paula Jones sex harassment case in 1998 He also accepted suspension of his licence to practise law in Arkansas & was fined £15 000. INTENSIVE PEACE TALKS IN MIDDLE EAST

Intensive Israeli-Palestinian peace talks are due to begin in Egypt. The talks in the resort of Taba come less than three weeks before Israel's prime ministerial elections & are expected to last for up to 10 days. Meanwhile Palestinian police say Israeli troops have shot dead a 15- year-old Palestinian in the Gaza Strip. This raises the death toll to 368 ` 310 of whom have been Palestinians ` since the uprising began in September.

PUTIN PULLS TROOPS FROM REBEL CHECHNYA

President Vladimir Putin has decided to withdraw some Russian forces from the rebel region of Chechnya. Reports said Mr Putin also ordered the head of the FSB domestic security service a successor to the KGB to take over command of the operation. NET SESSION FINDS FATHER LOST FOR YEARS

After a 20-year fruitless search for his father a UK taxi driver has found him in only 20 minutes via the internet Bob Etchells 55 put the question: "Where can I find someone in America" to the Ask Jeeves' www.ask.co.uk site. With only a name & birth date to go by Mr Etchells found the former American GI whom his mother had fallen in love with during World War II. He is flying to the US tomorrow to meet his father Robert Griffin.

CIVIL SERVANTS FAILED DEWAR ` TOP AIDE

Scottish civil servants failed Donald Dewar the late First Minister's chief aide Brian Fitzpatrick has claimed. Mr Fitzpatrick headed the Scottish Executive's policy unit for the 17 months Mr Dewar was in office. Writing in the Sunday Herald he said the civil service failed to provide adequate administrative back-up to Mr Dewar who died three months ago. He accuses it of being hostile to ministers & their advisers who were viewed as "outsiders".
