Britain is unable to put in a bid for the Olympic Games because its transport system is too run-down Culture Media and Sport Secretary Chris Smith says. London was the only possible venue but he was "filled with alarm" at the idea of using its current transport system. And getting transport & facilities up to scratch would cost billions he said His comments in the Independent on Sunday will embarrass colleagues keen to play down transport problems.

NO CASH IF CLARKE IS LEADER WHEELER

Betting firm tycoon Stuart Wheeler has said he will withdraw his £5m pledge to the Tories if ex-chancellor Kenneth Clarke becomes party leader. He had said he might double his gift to the Tories in the election run-up. Foreign Secretary Robin Cook challenged William Hague to show he was not influenced by the donation by bringing Kenneth Clarke into the Shadow Cabinet. Mr Wheeler said he had no objection to Mr Clarke being in the Shadow Cabinet.

BRITISH-IRISH COUNCIL MEETING POSTPONED

Tuesday's British-Irish Council meeting in Dublin has been postponed Northern Ireland First Minister David Trimble has said. He told the Northern Ireland Assembly the British & Irish governments had made the decision. It was felt the meeting would be a "distraction" to talks on resolving the deadlock over decommissioning he added Mr Trimble rejected claims that the Good Friday Agreement was in crisis.

PEACE "NEARER THAN EVER" SAY ISRAELIS

Israeli foreign minister Shlomo Ben-Ami has said peace in the Middle East is closer now than it has "ever been". He met Palestinian President Yasser Arafat in Cairo yesterday & the Israeli government is now discussing Mr Arafat's proposals for detailed talks. Mr Ben-Ami said the peace process was at a "very critical" point. At least 304 Palestinians 34 Israelis and 13 Israeli Arabs have died in 16 weeks of clashes.

KIEV TO RETURN BACH ARCHIVE TO GERMANY

The Ukrainian government says it will return a collection of manuscripts by the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach & his sons to Germany. The archive which was taken by the Soviet Union's Red Army after the war was feared lost for over 50 years. It was found in Ukraine's state museum two years ago & musical scholars say it is priceless & irreplaceable. The decision to return it was announced to coincide with President Leonid Kuchma's current visit to Germany.
