BODY EXHUMED AFTER EUTHANASIA PHONE-IN

The body of a woman has been exhumed after her son took part in a local radio phone-in on euthanasia. Elsie Elliott from Dronfield Derbyshire died five years ago after developing inoperable cancer. A post mortem examination is to be carried out following comments by her son Jon on BBC Radio Sheffield. Mr Elliott has been interviewed by detectives & released on police bail pending further inquiries.

LUNG CANCER PATIENTS "DENIED TREATMENT"

A treatment which may save the lives of lung cancer sufferers is being denied to Scottish patients a charity claims. A high-dose radiotherapy technique sees patients treated for 12 days in a row. But the Cancer Research Campaign says it cannot be offered in Scotland as there are not enough staff to open cancer centres at evenings & weekends The Scottish Executive admitted it was not being offered but said it would only benefit a minority of patients.

CLINTON AT RISK OF CANCER ` DOCTORS

President Clinton's doctors say he has an above-average risk of developing cancer after a cancerous spot was removed from his back last week. The US leader's chief doctor Connie Mariano said his risk of a recurrence of basal cell skin cancer was low. But he faced a higher risk than the average because of fair skin & years of sun exposure she said. The president's dermatologist said the spot had been "a little pearly".

DOCTOR RENEWS MMR VACCINE SAFETY DOUBTS

More doubts have been raised about the safety of the vaccine for measles mumps & rubella. There was not "adequate evidence of safety" said Dr Andrew Wakefield at London's Royal Free Hospital in a medical journal Adverse Drug Reactions Trials were too small & did not follow children up for a long enough period to gauge problems he said. The Department of Health has "totally rejected" the research.

FOOD AGENCY SEIZES CONTAMINATED BEEF

Contaminated beef destined for butchers' shops has been confiscated by UK officials carrying out BSE controls. The Food Standards Agency has said its officers impounded 41 000 kilogrammes of German beef at an abattoir in Newry County Down. It acted after spinal cord was discovered in two consignments. The discovery is the first of its kind and the agency says it shows the importance of robust BSE controls.

SWITZERLAND World football governing body Fifa has agreed to withdraw plans to reform the system of transfering players between European clubs at a meeting with European counterpart Uefa. GERMANY The authorities have ordered meat inspectors to tighten controls following the seizure in Northern Ireland of 41 tonnes of German beef contaminated with spinal cord.

Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer told parliament he had been wrong to beat up police officers during his militant days in the 1970s. Answering questions in the Bundestag Fischer said he might have thrown stones & beaten policemen but he "never kicked a man when he was down". CZECH REPUBLICThe winner of a lottery in Banska Bystrica will pick up a half share in the local brewery worth £3.5m. The owner of the brewery launched the game to help sort out a debt problem the Hospodarske Noviny paper wrote.

UKRAINE The government has said it will return to Germany manuscripts by Johann Sebastian Bach which were taken by the Red Army in the Second World War. FRANCE The Givenchy fashion house has said half of this Sunday's Paris show featuring a collection by UK designer Alexander McQueen has been cancelled due to "production problems".

MURDER HUNT BEGINS AFTER WOMAN STABBED

A murder inquiry is under way after the body of a woman who had been stabbed was discovered in a house in Devon. The body was found after police were called to the house in Silverton on Tuesday evening. The woman's two infant children were in the house at the time of the incident but were unhurt. They are now being cared for by relatives. A major incident room has been set up and a post mortem will be undertaken.

QUESTIONS RAISED OVER ANNA PROBE CHIEF

The appointment of Lord Laming as head of the inquiry into the death of Anna Climbie has been questioned by Lib Dem health spokesman Paul Burstow. Eight-year-old Anna suffered horrific abuse at the hands of her carers. Lord Laming was head of Hertfordshire's social services unit when it was severely criticised for its handling of a child abuse case in 1990. Anna's funeral is taking place in her homeland the Ivory Coast today.

INDIA Paramilitary forces in Kashmir say they have foiled a bid by militants to storm the heavily guarded airport at Srinagar. Two militants died & four police were hurt in a gun battle. GERMANY Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has appeared in court as a character witness for a friend Hans Joachim Klein ` a violent political extremist charged with three murders. CZECH REPUBLICOfficials have widened a ban on beef imports to include Italy and Austria following cases of BSE reported in both countries.

US "MUST CUT MILITARY NUMBERS IN JAPAN"

Politicians on the Japanese island of Okinawa have unanimously adopted a resolution demanding that the USA reduce its military presence there. The move follows the arrest of a US marine on suspicion of indecently assaulting a schoolgirl on the island. The resolution also urges Washington to tighten discipline among the 30 000 or so servicemen posted on the island. There were mass protests in Okinawa in 1995 after three US servicemen raped a 12-year-old girl Radio Japan recalled.

HISTORIC GIFT FROM D-DAY LANDINGS HERO

A soldier who piped the British troops on to the Normandy beaches on D-Day has donated his musical instrument to the Scottish War Museum. First Commando Bill Millin piping the troops ashore has become an enduring image of the D-Day landings. He was only 21 at the time. Mr Millin now in his 70s has also donated his beret & kilt. The Museum says it is delighted these important war artefacts have found such an appropriate resting place.

INTENSIVE PEACE TALKS IN MIDDLE EAST

Intensive Israeli-Palestinian peace talks are due to begin in Egypt. The talks in the resort of Taba come less than three weeks before Israel's prime ministerial elections & are expected to last for up to 10 days. Meanwhile Palestinian police say Israeli troops have shot dead a 15- year-old Palestinian in the Gaza Strip. This raises the death toll to 368 ` 310 of whom have been Palestinians ` since the uprising began in September.
