UK SUB PROTESTERS ARRESTED IN GIBRALTAR

Police in Gibraltar have arrested at least seven Greenpeace activists who used speed boats to encircle a disabled British nuclear submarine HMS Tireless Greenpeace said the eight were detained after they boarded the submarine & unfurled protest banners. The activists from Spain Germany Austria & Italy want the submarine taken back to Britain for repairs. Britain & Spain say a crack in a cooling pipe does not threaten safety.

TWO UK FIRMS IN TALKS OVER IRAQI OIL

Ten years after the Gulf War at least two British oil companies have been holding meetings with Iraq about developing the country's oil fields. Shell has said it could invest up to #2bn in the oil fields. Premier Oil is also considering setting up there. There is growing pressure to lift UN sanctions on Iraq but Britain & the US still oppose the move. Iraq the second biggest oil resource is allowed only to trade oil for food.

BANK SAYS US SLOWDOWN WILL NOT HURT UK

Bank of England Governor Sir Edward George has said Britain would be "relatively little affected" by an economic slowdown in the United States. He told the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland developments in the US had actually had a "positive" impact He said they had pushed down world oil prices & reduced the "exaggerated" weakness of the euro. The Bank has been urged to cut interest rates in the face of a feared downturn.

BLAIR "DEPLORES" INTERNET BABIES BUY

Prime Minister Tony Blair has told the Commons that he deplores the internet adoption of US twins by British couple Judith & Alan Kilshaw. "I think everyone feels it is absolutely deplorable that children are traded in this way " he said. He wants a review of the law to avoid the UK being caught up in future cases. A US couple paid an internet agency #4 000 in an attempt to adopt the twins who were then re-sold to the Kilshaws.

IRAQ SANCTIONS PROTESTERS LOBBY MPs

Hundreds of demonstrators brought traffic in London to a standstill as they gathered outside Westminster in protest at sanctions against Iraq. Campaigners carried child-sized coffins and called on MPs to stop the "suffering" of the innocent The protest marks the 10th anniversary of the start of allied bombing of Iraq during the Gulf War. The sanctions had caused terrible human suffering Labour MP Tam Dalyell said.

IRAQI NUCLEAR MATERIAL UNDER INSPECTION

The International Atomic Energy Agency has said it is to carry out a limited inspection of Iraqi nuclear material. It will verify if Iraq still has material that was there two years ago when UN weapons inspectors were barred. Full inspections stopped in 1998 when US & British war planes launched an air campaign on the grounds Iraq was hindering the work of UN arms experts. The last limited inspection on the non- weapons grade material was last year.

ARMED HIJACKER FORCES FLIGHT DIVERSION

An armed man claiming to be an Iraqi supporter of Saddam Hussein has been ovepowered after diverting a plane with the US ambassador to Yemen aboard. Two shots were fired but the 91 passengers on board the Boeing 727 on an internal flight within Yemen were not injured. The crew managed to overpower the hijacker who was holding a pistol. Most passengers including US envoy Barbara Bodine disembarked at Djibouti
