TWO CHILDREN DIE IN BELFAST HOUSE BLAZE

Two children aged two & three have died in a fire at a house in south Belfast police have confirmed. Their bodies were found next to a settee behind which they had crawled in an attempt to find shelter. Two women & another child were taken to hospital from the house in Delhi Parade & treated for burns & the effects of smoke inhalation. It is thought the fire spread from the living room where the children were.

BLAIR HEADS TO BELFAST FOR PEACE TALKS

Prime Minister Tony Blair is flying to Belfast later this afternoon to try to break the deadlock in the Northern Ireland peace process. A spokesman played down hopes of an imminent breakthrough but said talks might establish whether agreement on oustanding issues could be achieved. Mr Blair will try to speak to Ulster unionists & the SDLP before leaving. He is likely to speak to President Clinton by telephone this evening.

ARAFAT AND PERES HEAD FOR GAZA MEETING

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat & Israeli former premier Shimon Peres are to hold top-level talks say reports. An adviser to Mr Arafat says "critical subjects" will be discussed at the Gaza meeting scheduled for tonight. The session follows marathon talks held between Palestinian & Israeli teams at the Erez crossing point on Thursday. The two sides are currently deadlocked over President Clinton's peace plans which urge both to make concessions.

MIDDLE EAST PEACE NEGOTIATIONS RESUME

Israelis & Palestinians have resumed peace talks after they were cancelled following the killing of a Jewish settler in Gaza. Israel closed off the Gaza Strip & shut the Palestinian airport reversing steps taken after recent negotiations. The first agenda item is expected to be the reopening of Gaza in exchange for a Palestinian promise to calm violence. The peace deal proposed by President Clinton is also on the table.

TONY BLAIR "WILL VOTE TO BAN HUNTING"

Prime Minister Tony Blair will vote to ban fox-hunting if he is in Westminster for next week's Hunting Bill debate Downing Street has said. "If he's here for the vote he will vote for a ban " a spokesman confirmed. MPs will vote on Wednesday to support either an outright ban on hunting with dogs hunting under voluntary regulations or licensed hunting. Pro-hunting groups will stage a vigil outside Parliament from 11am on Monday.

MANDELSON ADMITS PASSPORT CONVERSATION

Peter Mandelson spoke to a minister about the Hinduja brothers' bid for a UK passport the Prime Minister's official spokesman has admitted. Yesterday Downing Street said the Northern Ireland Secretary had not got involved in the tycoons' application. But Mr Mandelson has now recalled a brief conversation with Home Office minister Mike O'Brien on their behalf. He has been accused of helping them in exchange for a £1m Millennium Dome loan

EX-INMATES SUE GOVT OVER PRISON ESCAPE

Two ex-republican inmates are suing the Government for damages over injuries they say were inflicted by prison officers during a failed 1994 jailbreak Danny McNamee & Liam McCotter ` both now free men ` were at the High Court hearing in London. They were recaptured after the breakout from Whitemoor jail Cambridgeshire. The pair together with a third inmate armed robber Andrew Russell want #50 000 each for "deliberate attacks".

A five-year-old girl has died in hospital after being injured in a blaze at her family home in Godalming Surrey Her father also died in the fire which is being investigated by police. QUEEN MOTHERThe Queen Mother has appeared at the Sandringham Women's Institute with the Queen. She was able to walk unaided into the village hall. BIRDS Bernard Rainer has been served notice by the Greater London Authority to stop selling food for the pigeons in London's Trafalgar Square ending a 49- year family tradition.

PLANTED BOMB BLAMED ON DISSIDENT GROUP

Dissident republicans are believed to be responsible for a planned roadside bomb attack on the security services Northern Ireland police chiefs say. The bomb was "undoubtedly" aimed at officers & military staff RUC Chief Constable Sir Ronnie Flanagan said. The bomb found on a road outside Armagh last Saturday contained 1 000lbs of home-made explosives. Army explosives experts have now made the device safe.

BLAIR PRAISES CLINTON PEACE COMMITMENT

Tony Blair has praised Bill Clinton's "unwavering commitment" to bringing peace to Northern Ireland as the US president prepares to leave office. Mr Clinton was a "very fine president" and "a very true friend to Britain" a spokesman for the Prime Minister said. George W Bush is being inaugurated as the new US president tomorrow. Foreign Secretary Robin Cook is set to visit Washington next month to meet new US Secretary of State Colin Powell.

QUAKE SURVIVORS MOVED FROM DANGER ZONES

El Salvador officials say they are trying to move earthquake survivors away from danger zones where there is a risk of after-shocks. President Flores said rescue efforts would go on but work is switching to the task of burying decomposing corpses Over 600 bodies have been found but the final toll is expected to exceed 1 000. Major roads remain blocked in places. International aid is being distributed to around 20 000 people in shelters.
