WAR TRIBUNAL MAY PROBE URANIUM WEAPONS

The chief UN war crimes prosecutor has said her tribunal could reopen its investigation into Nato's use of weapons containing depleted uranium. The weapons have been blamed for cases of cancer among soldiers & civilians. Carla del Ponte said allegations of possible war crimes were investigated during the bombing of Kosovo. Correspondents say prosecution is unlikely unless it emerges DU was deliberately used to cause cancer.

BIG RISE IN VIOLENT CRIME FIGURES SHOW

Violent crime in England & Wales rose by 8% & robbery by 21% last year Home Office crime figures show. The number of violent assaults across England & Wales was 589 688 or 11.6 per 1 000 people ` the ninth time in 10 years violent crime has increased. There were 90 465 robberies 417 538 house burglaries & 358 276 car thefts Sexual offences numbered 37 360. Overall crime was down 0.2% ` burglary fell 8% & vehicle thefts 7%.

HAGUE CALLS BLAIR "THE GREAT PRETENDER"

Tory leader William Hague has branded Tony Blair the "great pretender" & attacked the Government's new crime initiative launched today as gimmicky. Earlier Home Secretary Jack Straw said his new street crime crackdown would target thieves who steal mobile phones. But Mr Hague dismissed the scheme & called for more police on the streets during Prime Minister's Question Time. Mr Blair countered by saying police numbers were rising due to investment.

Immigration officials in Australia are searching for eight members of the British Olympic team whom they accuse of having overstayed their visas. Three months after the Sydney games ended 108 Olympic athletes trainers and officials remain unaccounted for. They include 11 from the US & others from Germany Russia Nigeria & Japan Officials say that if these people come forward they will be offered the chance to leave Australia voluntarily.

USA Miami couple who disciplined their

11-year-old son by ripping off his toenails dropping a sledgehammer on his feet & making him eat his own vomit have been imprisoned for life. SPAINA law has come into force which may lead to the expulsion of around 30 000 illegal residents in a bid to stem the tide of illegal immigration. PHILIPPINES ARMY CLOSING ON KIDNAP GIRL

The military in the Philippines has said it is closing in on rebels who have kidnapped a six-year-old girl. The military thinks Eiman April Grant is being held in a heavily forested area in Parang Tubaran in the Basilan province where she was snatched. Her British stepfather Doug Grant has dismissed reports his wife organised the kidnap to get money from him. Mrs Grant said a gang entered her home demanded money then snatched the girl.

PLANTED BOMB BLAMED ON DISSIDENT GROUP

Dissident republicans are believed to be responsible for a planned roadside bomb attack on the security services Northern Ireland police chiefs say. The bomb was "undoubtedly" aimed at officers & military staff RUC Chief Constable Sir Ronnie Flanagan said. The bomb found on a road outside Armagh last Saturday contained 1 000lbs of home-made explosives. Army explosives experts have now made the device safe.

PETROL PRICE FALLS PUSH DOWN INFLATION

Falling petrol prices helped to push down inflation to a nine-month low last month according to official figures. The Office for National Statistics reported that the headline rate of inflation in December was 2.9% down from 3.2% the previous month. The underlying inflation rate which excludes mortgage interest payments also fell from 2.2% to 2.0%. The Bank of England is likely to face more pressure for an interest rate cut.

An American woman sold her babies to a Californian couple via the internet for #4 000 then snatched them back.
