McCONNELL HAPPY WITH PAY NEGOTIATIONS

The Education Minister Jack McConnell has said good progress is being made in the negotiations on teachers pay. In a statement to Parliament he said it was worth waiting another few days to get the details right. He confirmed that teachers had been offered a 21.5% pay rise over three years in addition to extra funding. This extra cash would allow for more classroom assistants improved training time an early retirement scheme & other improvements in conditions.

DRIVE FOR CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE LAUNCHED

A drive to make better discipline in Scotland's classrooms a top priority has been launched by Education Minister Jack McConnell. Warning disruptive behaviour should be a concern for everyone he urged parents to work with schools to find ways of improving discipline. He made the call in Edinburgh where the first meeting was held today of a "task group" set up for that purpose. The group will look at existing priorities & consider improvements.

Professor McCrone whose inquiry led to the pay settlement for teachers with the executive has welcomed the deal. He told BBC Radio Scotland teachers had got a good deal. "What the Government have offered goes some way beyond our own proposals in terms of pay." The Educational Institute of Scotland Scotland's largest union involved has also welcomed the package. Ronnie Smith general Secretary of EIS said the deal was " an investment in professionalism".

SACKED ST JOHNSTONE PLAYERS TO APPEAL

The two St Johnstone players dismissed for allegedly taking cocaine have lodged an appeal with the Scottish Premier League. George O'Boyle & Kevin Thomas' lawyer believes the club has treated the two men unfairly. The alleged offence came to light when the club's physiotherapist saw the players during a Christmas night out. Both players declined to coomment today but it is understood they are now denying any involvement.
