TRIBUNAL CHARGES PLAVSIC WITH GENOCIDE

Former Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic will face charges of genocide this week after surrendering to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague. Plavsic was deputy to Radovan Karadzic during the 1992-95 Balkans War. She took over from him in 1996. The 70-year-old faces charges of genocide crimes against humanity & war crimes at the Dutch court. She is being held in the tribunal's detention centre in Scheveningen.

NATO CHIEF ENTERS DEPLETED URANIUM ROW

Nato is to run further checks on the health risks from the use of depleted uranium shells during the Balkans War. Secretary-General George Robertson made the announcement at a Brussels summit while stressing he was confident there was "little risk" from DU munitions. Several Western peacekeepers who served in Bosnia have since died of cancer & many have complained of illnesses. It has led to fears that the use of DU- tipped tank shells could be a factor.

BOSNIAN SERB LEADER FACES HAGUE COURT

Former president of the Bosnian Serb Republic Biljana Plavsic has pleaded not guilty to charges of genocide at the International war Crimes Tribunal. Plavsic is one the most senior figures to account for her role in atrocities committed in the former Yugoslavia. She was an extreme nationalist & enthusiastic backer of ethnic cleansing during the Bosnian war. During the war she was deputy to the Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic.

RADON IN WATER "RAISES RISK OF CANCER"

People living in radon hotspots could be at increased risk of stomach cancer from drinking water a study shows. The Department of the Environment has found the radioactive gas does not always disappear into the air when poured with 20% staying in the water. It found 8% of Devon homes with private water supplies had radon levels above recommended safety limits. The gas when inhaled has been linked to 2 500 lung cancer deaths a year.

GOVT URGED TO EXPLAIN URANIUM DOCUMENTS

Opposition politicians are demanding another Government statement on the potential health risks from weapons containing depleted uranium. Army papers seen by the BBC suggest officials were warned almost four years ago that such arms could cause cancer. But ministers say no evidence exists linking ill-health to depleted uranium. The Ministry of Defence said the papers contained scientifically incorrect information & were misleading.

HEALTH WORKERS RECEIVE £250m PAY BOOST

More than 350 000 NHS workers are set to receive a pay increase worth £250m the Department of Health has announced. The rise will apply to most NHS staff apart from doctors & nurses and will boost some wage packets by up to 20%. Lab technicians porters cleaners psychologists & physiotherapists will all benefit from the April 1 increase. The rise which increased the basic offer by 3.7% followed a two-year campaign by the MSF union.

GERMANY GOES GREEN OVER BSE CRISIS

The co-leader of Germany's Green Party has been named agriculture minister after Karl-Heinz Funke's resignation over handling of the BSE crisis. Renate Kuenast is expected to promote a "back to nature" approach. Funke a farmer is a Social Democrat and an ally of Chancellor Schroeder. Meanwhile senior Social Democrat Ulla Schmidt has taken over as health minister from Andrea Fischer a Green who also resigned over the BSE affair.

PALESTINIANS REJECT CLINTON PEACE PLAN

The Palestinians have rejected US President Bill Clinton's proposals for peace in the Middle East reports say. Information minister Yasser Abed Rabbo is reported to have said the proposals were unacceptable to the Palestinians. Peace negotiators said Mr Clinton's deal was identical to Israel's blueprint for ending the violence. Yesterday Mr Clinton called for a "long leap" from both sides to close their 52-year divide.

PALESTINIAN GIRLS INHALE TEAR GAS

About 100 Palestinian schoolgirls inhaled tear gas after Israeli troops fired the cannisters near a school in the West Bank it has been reported. The gas cloud spread through the school during a battle in Silat al-Dahr in which four Palestinian men were also reported injured by live bullets. In al-Khader two Palestinians were injured during a clash with troops. Meanwhile talks continue behind the scenes to try to reach a peace deal.
