SCHROEDER AND PUTIN ATTEND XMAS SERVICE

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder & Russian President Vladimir Putin have marked the Russian Orthodox Christmas. The leaders & their wives attended a service at Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral for a service led by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church. Earlier they took a stroll in the Kremlin & the Red Square at the start of Mr Schroeder's two-day visit. Tonight the two leaders were due to celebrate Mrs Putin's birthday.

Russian president Vladimir Putin has dismissed an American press report that Russia has deployed nuclear weapons at its military base on the Baltic Sea. "That is rubbish " Mr Putin told a German reporter who asked him about the claim attributed to a US official. Mr Putin was speaking as he welcomed German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder & his wife on a private visit to Moscow. The claim that nuclear weapons had been moved to the base in Kaliningrad was also denied by Russian military chiefs.

TWO GERMAN MINISTERS QUIT IN BSE CRISIS

Two German ministers at the heart of the country's growing crisis over mad cow disease have announced their resignations. Health Minister Andrea Fischer & Agriculture Minister Karl-Heinz Funke were accused of complacency over mad cow disease & human equivalent vCJD. Several cases of BSE have been discovered in Germany since November. Ms Fisher said her resignation aimed to boost deflated consumer confidence.

ITALIAN DEATHS "LINKED TO NATO WEAPONS"

A military watchdog group has linked the deaths of at least six Italian soldiers who served in the Balkans to depleted uranium in Nato weapons. It is the first official report to make the link. It comes after the UN found evidence of radioactivity at some Kosovo sites hit by Nato depleted uranium shells in 1999 But Spain where eight people who served in the Balkans have developed cancer says there is no proven link.

PINOCHET FAILS TO SHOW FOR HEALTH TESTS

Former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet is facing arrest after he failed to turn up for court-ordered medical tests General Pinochet was due to present himself at a military hospital in Santiago at 2pm British time. The tests were ordered by Judge Juan Guzman who is investigating the death or disappearance of 75 opponents of military rule during the 1970s. The general's lawyers had warned that he would not attend.

PAPERS TELL OF HOLOCAUST PREPARATIONS

Scotland's preparations for nuclear holocaust have been made public after more than 30 years in secret documents released today. The papers reveal the extent to which officials in the Scottish Office & local government were preparing for the impact of such an event. The documents are among papers released by the National Archives of Scotland. One study said 1m Scots would be wiped out & there was confusion over how to dispose of the bodies.

KUFUOR SWORN IN AS PRESIDENT OF GHANA

John Kufuor has been sworn in as the new president of Ghana at a ceremony in the country's capital Accra. Mr Kufuor beat outgoing vice-president John Atta Mills ` the governing party candidate ` in a presidential run-off at the end of last month. He takes over from Jerry Rawlings who first seized power in a military coup more than 20 years ago. Mr Rawlings has called on the army to stay loyal to the new administration.

MOSCOW BANS "SUBVERSIVE" SALVATION ARMY

The authorities in Moscow have refused to re-register the Salvation Army claiming it to be a dangerous group which seeks to undermine the state. The ban has fuelled fears that freedom of belief in Russia may be in danger as the Russian Orthodox Church tries to assert its influence over the country. A law passed in 1997 aimed to boost the power of the church at the expense of religious organisations from abroad. The law required religious groups to re-register and many were turned down.
