FOX CALLS ON NHS TO IMPROVE CLEANLINESS

Tory shadow health secretary Dr Liam Fox has called for a return to basic "matron's values of cleanliness" after a critical survey of many NHS wards. A survey of 700 hospital buildings saw 250 given the lowest cleanliness grade. The data in the Health Service Journal are reportedly based on Department of Health Figures. Government sources claimed ministers were cleaning up "the mess" created by the Tories' internal NHS market.

HEART GIRL SEES TRANSPLANT HOPES DASHED

A 12-year-old girl's hopes of a vital heart transplant have been dashed after an operation had to be cancelled because the donor organ was unsuitable. Hannah Pudsey of Nafferton East Yorks has two holes in her heart which means her lungs become flooded with blood. Four months ago another planned transplant had to be cancelled. A spokesman for the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne said the donor heart had deteriorated too much.

HANGED Michael Lewis 41 has been found hanged in his cell at Bristol Prison where he was awaiting trial on charges of rape indecent assault & drugs-related offences. CLUB Police investigating allegations that a woman was raped after leaving a club in Erith Kent have arrested four 17-year-olds who voluntarily attended a police station. BLAZE Twenty acute psychiatric patients were moved to safety after fire broke out in a bedroom at Highbury Hospital in Nottingham. No one was injured.
