BBC "HIDEOUSLY WHITE" SAYS GREG DYKE

"I think the BBC is hideously white " the Corporation's Director-general Greg Dyke has said. In an interview to be broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland Mr Dyke says he believes many people from different races leave after joining the BBC. He says that by 2003 10% of the BBC's UK workforce & four per cent of managers would be from minorities. The BBC says it wants diversity to be "an asset not an issue or a problem".

LATEST HEALTH SCARE CONTROVERSY SPREADS

Clashes have escalated over claims to be aired in a BBC documentary tomorrow about the safety of farmed salmon. The makers of the programme allege the fish contain higher than expected levels of toxins. But Scotland Office Minister Brian Wilson has accused the "inaccurate" programme of putting jobs at risk. The BBC replied that the documentary has raised a number of very important issues relating to farmed salmon & the salmon industry as a whole.

IRAN AMENDS LAW ON WOMEN'S STUDY ABROAD

Iran's parliament the Majlis has passed a controversial bill allowing unmarried Iranian women access to state grants to study in foreign countries. Before it passes into law the bill has to be examined by an Islamic committee to ensure it does not contradict the tenets of Islam or the constitution. The new bill amends a law from 1985 which denied unmarried women state funds to pursue their studies abroad. The bill has been a bone of contention between reformists & conservatives.

BROWN PLANS SKILLS TESTS FOR JOBLESS

Chancellor Gordon Brown is announcing a #24m plan to introduce new skills tests for the long-term unemployed. Those out of work for over six months will be required to take a test from April before being offered training. Benefit could be withdrawn from those who refuse the tests or training ` but not single parents or disabled people. Mr Brown said it would help the UK move towards full employment. He will detail the plan in a speech to the AEEU union.

BROWN "MAY BRING IN TARGETED TAX CUTS"

Chancellor Gordon Brown has said the Government could introduce "targeted tax cuts" over the coming year. His comments on the BBC's 10 O'Clock News come as the Conservatives are planning a campaign to rubbish Labour's economic record in power. Shadow Chancellor Michael Portillo said Labour would have to put up taxes because it had spent too much money. But Mr Brown insisted his policies were for the long-term good of the economy.

FUEL PROTESTERS SUSPEND REFINERY PICKET

Protesters outside two oil refineries at Pembroke west Wales have abandoned their action for the time being. But spokesman Mike Green said they will bring the country "to a standstill" if the Government fails to act. Twenty campaigners for lower fuel taxes spent the night outside the Texaco refinery at Pembroke Dock; a further 10 picketed the nearby Elf plant. Almost all the protesters were hauliers from the local area.

LEGACY DENIES GIFT LINKED TO DOME BID

The consortium expected to buy the Millennium Dome has said a donation to the Labour Party by its chief executive is irrelevant to its bid. A spokesman for Legacy plc said Robert Bourne had made the £100 000 donation from his own personal funds. He agreed three years ago ` before the Dome was built ` to donate the cash in three instalments the spokesman added. The Tories have suggested it influenced acceptance of Legacy's £125m Dome bid.

HOLE IN THE WALL BOY 12 IS ASSAULTED

A boy aged 12 has been robbed after taking money out of a cash machine. The boy was walking across the playing fields in the Toryglen district of Glasgow when he was grabbed by two women & a man. They took a two-figure sum of money & some personal items including the bank card before running off. Police said the boy was unhurt but shaken by the attack. It was unclear whose account the boy had withdrawn the money from.
