LOYALIST LEADER THREATENING TO RESIGN

Ulster Democratic Party leader Gary McMichael has warned he will be forced to resign if the party changes its policy on the Good Friday Agreement. Mr McMichael spoke amid signs that a majority of UDP members are now against the agreement. He told the BBC's Inside Politics that he was "someone who is fundamentally and irreversibly pro-Agreement". He denied being told he will be removed as leader unless he changes the policy.

TYCOON POISED TO BECOME THAI PREMIER

Telecommunications tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra is poised to become Thailand's prime minister general election exit polls indicate. His Thai Rak Thai (Thais Love Thais) party is forecast to win around 200 of the 500 seats in the lower house. Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai whose Democrat Party looks set to win around 100 seats has conceded defeat. Candidates from 37 parties are standing and analysts say a coalition is likely.

THAKSIN "WINS THAI GENERAL ELECTION"

Tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra may have achieved the unprecedented feat of winning an overall majority in Thailand's parliament. His Thai Rak Thai (Thais Love Thais) Party has won 256 of the 500 seats according to early unofficial results from yesterday's general election. Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai's Democrat Party is in second place with 124 seats Official vote counting is still going on in several constituencies.

US CONGRESS CONFIRMS BUSH ELECTION WIN

The US Congress has confirmed the election of George W Bush as US President under the chairmanship of his defeated rival Vice-President Al Gore. The Senate & House of Representatives convened jointly to read & confirm the votes of the Electoral College. A succession of House members tried to raise points of order alleging election misconduct & fraud. But Mr Gore overruled them because no Senator supported the points of order.

RECORD NUMBER OF POLICE BY 2004 ` STRAW

Police numbers in England & Wales will be at their highest ever level by 2004 the Government has pledged. Home Secretary Jack Straw told MPs that #454m was available for recruitment this year & in the next three years. Police numbers nationally should top the levels they were at before the 1997 election in 2002 or 2003 he said. Crime levels across the country were 10% down at the end of 1999 compared with 1997 Mr Straw added.

BODY UPHOLDS BLAIR BROADCAST COMPLAINTS

The Independent Television Commission has upheld opposition parties' complaints over ITV's question & answer session with the prime minister. Parties in Scotland complained Labour was being given an unfair advantage in the programme ` since it was broadcast 10 days before the Falkirk by-election. The watchdog body said the broadcast was relevant to the by-election. It said the opposition parties should be allowed to comment on the issues of the day in the same way as Tony Blair.
