TORIES CLAIM COVER-UP ON NURSE NUMBERS

The Government has been accused of misleading the public over its pledge to employ 20 000 more nurses in England The Conservatives said the plans suggested the nurses would be full- time but many of the 16 000 new nurses recruited since 1997 were part-time. The Royal College of Nursing has expressed its disappointment. But the Department of Health said it had always been clear that part-time posts were included in the figure.

A man accused of killing Julie- Ann Osborne in Belfast has been remanded in custody by city magistrates Andrew Robinson 22 is due to appear in court again on January 8. DEATHA man is being questioned over the death of a 33-year-old man at a New Year's Eve party in the Harcliffe area of Bristol. A post mortem examination will be held later.

COUNTRIES SIGN WORLD ANTI-CRIME TREATY

Justice ministers from more than 160 countries are meeting in Palermo in Sicily to sign a new treaty combating international organised crime. Signatories will undertake to make it an offence to associate with international racketeers. The treaty contains sections aimed against those who traffic in migrants. It also seeks to abolish bank secrecy often used to mask criminal financial transactions by international mafias.

ARAFAT MEETS ISRAELI OFFICIALS IN GAZA

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has met senior Israeli officials in Gaza in an attempt to restart peace talks. Mr Arafat saw Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami & a senior aide of Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Israel said the aim was to resume peace negotiations shattered by 11 weeks of Israeli-Palestinian violence. OFFICIALS TO DISCUSS MID-EAST VIOLENCE

Senior Israeli & Palestinian security officials & CIA director George Tenet are due to meet in Egypt in a new bid to curb over three months of violence. Israel is calling on the Palestinians to re-arrest Islamic militants freed from jail when the violence erupted. They also want security co-operation on the ground to resume. However with hopes of an overall peace deal fading observers say agreement on security issues may be hard to find.

PAPERS TELL OF HOLOCAUST PREPARATIONS

Scotland's preparations for nuclear holocaust have been made public after more than 30 years in secret documents released today. The papers reveal the extent to which officials in the Scottish Office & local government were preparing for the impact of such an event. The documents are among papers released by the National Archives of Scotland. One study said 1m Scots would be wiped out & there was confusion over how to dispose of the bodies.

NO PLANS TO SHELVE RUC REFORM ` GOVT

The Government has denied it has plans to shelve sweeping reform of the police force in Northern Ireland. But it says it has made it clear to Northern Ireland parties the consequences of any further delays. It follows newspaper reports that the Government was considering an indefinite delay after failing to win the support of the nationalist SDLP. The party wants guarantees on certain aspects of implementing the reforms.

HEALTH STUDY OVER NATO WEAPONS "URGENT"

A Commons committee is expected to call defence ministers before it to say what is being done over fears that soldiers' cancer is linked to Nato weapons. Bruce George chairman of the Commons Defence Committee said a MoD inquiry into the health impact of the use of depleted uranium in weapons was urgent. Diplomatic files released under the 30- year-rule reveal frantic activity to secure the release in Colombia of the then England soccer captain Bobby Moore Moore was held accused of shoplifting just before the 1970 World Cup finals. The files outline pressure put on to get Moore released including a visit by the head of Colombia's security service to the judge's home. Moore was cleared by the judge who said he hoped he would score many goals.

Warsaw has marked the New Year by unveiling what the mayor says is the world's tallest clock tower. The clock faces are 540 feet above the street and can be seen 3 miles away. The building housing the clock is the city's biggest and some say ugliest landmark: the towering Palace of Culture left over from Communist days. Locals say the best view of Warsaw is from the top of the tower - but only because that is the only place in the city you can't see the Palace from.
