MURDER PROBE INTO BAT ATTACK AT PUB

A murder inquiry is under way after a man died from injuries suffered in an attack by an armed gang at a London pub Douglas McPherson 42 was among up to 20 people gathered after hours at the London Tavern in Clapton. He was attacked on Boxing Day after four men carrying baseball & cricket bats kicked the door down & demanded somebody by name. A second man 45 suffered minor head injuries. Mr McPherson died yesterday.

A second man arrested on Friday was released without charge.

The Government was warned it could face a legal challenge over plans to extend embryo research. Tory MP Edward Leigh warned violating constraints in the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 could provoke a reaction from the courts. Chancellor Gordon Brown rejected his opposition shadow's calls to drop plans for a climate change levy. Michael Portillo said the levy may lead to more job losses in car production.

A man accused of killing Julie- Ann Osborne in Belfast has been remanded in custody by city magistrates Andrew Robinson 22 is due to appear in court again on January 8. DEATHA man is being questioned over the death of a 33-year-old man at a New Year's Eve party in the Harcliffe area of Bristol. A post mortem examination will be held later.

US EXPERTS SEEK RELIABLE VOTING SYSTEM

Two top US technology schools plan to develop a voting system to avoid the confusion of this year's elections. The California & Massachusetts Institutes of Technology want to develop new voting machines before the 2004 presidential contest. They have had a $250 000 grant from the philanthropic Carnegie Corporation. A nation that put men on the moon should be able to count ballots accurately said MIT head Charles Vest.

SCHOOLGIRL 15 ELECTROCUTED ON TRACK

A 15-year-old schoolgirl died when she fell onto an electrified train track police said. The girl was walking along tracks near Shepperton train station in Surrey with a group of teenage friends when she stumbled on to the "third rail". The spokesman added: "We don't know why the teenagers were on the train track but it appears it was a shortcut." Police are waiting to interview 12 teenagers who witnessed the tragedy.

Ministers have been accused of showing "scant regard" for Parliament's interests after keeping MPs in the dark over the Millennium Dome's finances. Public Accounts Committee chairman David Davis said an idemnity was given to the Dome without Parliament's assent He said it could have cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of pounds & called the situation "deplorable". He spoke as he presented the Commons with the committee's reports for 2000.

DIVERS TO HELP IN HUNT FOR MISSING GIRL

A police underwater search team has been brought in to help with the hunt for missing teenager Leanne Tiernan. The 16-year-old was last seen returning home to Bramley W Yorkshire from a Christmas shopping trip to Leeds with a friend on November 26. No trace has been found of her despite a massive police investigation. The underwater team will initially search the Leeds-Liverpool canal before moving on to other waterways.
