CHINA

Seven people have been killed after a chain bridge collapsed as a wedding party was crossing it. Twenty people from a group crossing to take the dowry to the bride's house fell into the water. Two are missing. The 64-m bridge was in Nanchong City in southwest China's Sichuan Province. FRANCE Customs have seized almost 16 tonnes of contraband cigarettes being smuggled from Turkey to Belgium. The "Regal" brand cigarettes were marked "Made in England" they said.

China's 1989 Tiananmen Square killings were ordered in fear that demonstrators could topple the Communist regime say papers reportedly smuggled out of China The papers detail talks between late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping & other Communist leaders during the crisis. They show paranoia that anti-communists were controlling the protest & that protesters would demand leaders' arrest They were provided by an unnamed civil servant & are published in a US book.

GROUND MOVEMENT THREATENS MORE HOUSES

Over thirty homes in South Edinburgh have now had to be cleared because of serious subsidence with further evidence of ground movement today. The houses in Ferniehill district have either slipped into the old lime quarry workings or are in danger of collapse. City council officials have recieved a preliminary assesment of the situation based on test drilling in the area. Residents who were moved out have been given temporary accomodation or been taken in by friends & family.

WARM PRAISE FOR COLD HOGMANAY REVELLERS

Police & the organisers of Scotland's Hogmanay celebrations have praised the partygoers who braved terrible weather to welcome in the New Year. Revellers who took to the streets of the main cities for major celebrations won tributes for heeding public safety and public order appeals. Edinburgh saw 100 000 cram the centre for the UK's largest street party ` with police reporting only four arrests However the poor weather forced the cancellation of Stirling's celebrations

GERMANY Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has agreed to meet French President Jacques Chirac at a special Franco- German summit next month following last weekend's strained summit in Nice. USA man who stalked actress Gwyneth Paltrow for over a year & sent her hundreds of e-mails has been sent to a psychiatric unit in Los Angeles. Dante Soyu also harassed the star's parents. YUGOSLAVIA Bosnia & Yugoslavia have established diplomatic ties eight years after the war which saw Bosnia secede from the federation.

UK CEMENT FIRM FACING FRENCH TAKEOVER

French building materials giant Lafarge has confirmed it has agreed a £3.1bn takeover of UK-based cement group Blue Circle Industries. Blue Circle shares surged after news of the recommended offer set to create the world's largest cement producer. The deal comes less than a year after Lafarge tried & failed to snap up Blue Circle with a hostile takeover bid Blue Circle employs 18 637 staff of whom 4 779 are based in the UK.

LIFE FOR MAN WHO DROWNED WIFE IN BATH

A millionaire businessman has been jailed for life for handcuffing his wife & drowning her in a bath. Alun Phillips 36 was convicted last month of the murder in May of his 34- year-old wife Nadine at their home in Fulham south-west London. The jury heard he killed her to avoid a "messy" divorce while their three children lay sleeping. The judge at Southwark Crown Court called him "a cold blooded murderer".

ALGERIAN FIGHTS FOR LIFE AFTER ATTACK

An Algerian man is fighting for his life in a London hospital after being stabbed in an apparent racial incident. The attack happened at 12.30am on the corner of Old Compton Street in Soho. Police are hunting a black man seen running from the scene described as aged 26-28 & about 5ft 7ins tall. Police are appealing for witnesses ` one of whom is believed to have videotaped the attack ` to contact the incident room on020 7437 1212.

Two new cases of mad cow disease have been detected one in northern & one in eastern France. France has reported 217 cases of BSE since 1991. ARMENIA The Armenian parliament has been without telephone connections for several days after the lines were cut because the bill had not been paid. Speaker Armen Khachatryan said on national television that the move was a threat to security & showed no respect for parliament & the state. But he also criticised the Ministry of Finance for not sorting out the bill.

PAPERS TELL OF HOLOCAUST PREPARATIONS

Scotland's preparations for nuclear holocaust have been made public after more than 30 years in secret documents released today. The papers reveal the extent to which officials in the Scottish Office & local government were preparing for the impact of such an event. The documents are among papers released by the National Archives of Scotland. One study said 1m Scots would be wiped out & there was confusion over how to dispose of the bodies.

RUSSIAN TV TOWER TO BE WORLD'S TALLEST

The Ostankino TV tower in north Moscow which was badly damaged by fire in August is set to be the highest in the world when it is restored. Itar-Tass news agency said the tower would be 562 metres high after the flagpole on the top is replaced with new TV broadcasting antennas. Ostankino held the record for the tallest tower for many years until it was overtaken by a tower in Toronto. Russian engineers say the new antennas are not just to capture the title back.

SCHROEDER AND PUTIN ATTEND XMAS SERVICE

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder & Russian President Vladimir Putin have marked the Russian Orthodox Christmas. The leaders & their wives attended a service at Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral for a service led by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church. Earlier they took a stroll in the Kremlin & the Red Square at the start of Mr Schroeder's two-day visit. Tonight the two leaders were due to celebrate Mrs Putin's birthday.

BRITONS LANGUISHING IN FOREIGN PRISONS

More than 2 500 Britons are starting the New Year languishing in foreign jails across the world it has emerged. Many have been convicted on falsified evidence or without any real evidence at all according to the organisation Fair Trials Abroad. Four are awaiting death sentences while others are desperately ill they claim. The Foreign Office said they were liaising with the organisation in looking at a number of the cases.
