STRAW ATTACKED FOR COMMENTS ON LAYWERS

The Home Secretary has been condemned by solicitors for suggesting that some lawyers care more about money than their "responsibilities to society". At a crime reduction conference Jack Straw said: "Lawyers never agree except about taking money off clients." But Law Society chief Michael Napier was "astonished" by the commenents. "It is extraordinary that Jack Straw a lawyer himself should disparage the profession in such a way " he said.

Senior Scottish Executive officials are to attend a conference at Skibo Castle this week ` at a cost of £40 000. Opposition MSPs are expected to attack the decision to stage the event at the Highland venue which hosted pop star Madonna's exclusive wedding last year. The 20 officials will be joined by government officials from Nordic countries at the event where help for rural economies is on the agenda. The bill will be met by the Scottish Executive & two enterprise agencies.

WATCHDOG ATTACKS MALE/FEMALE PAY GAP

The Equal Opportunities Commission says women are still receiving significantly less pay than men. It says the gap between the pay of men in full-time work & women in part- time jobs has hardly moved since the Equal Pay Act was introduced in 1970. The gap stands at 39% the widest gulf in any EU country. But the Confederation of British Industry has condemned calls for firms to be forced to carry out pay reviews.

TOP ZIMBABWE JUDGE QUITS UNDER PRESSURE

Zimbabwe's chief justice who ruled against President Robert Mugabe's land seizure programme is to retire early an official newspaper has reported. State-run paper The Herald said Anthony Gubbay's term had been cut short after he reneged on an agreement to take four months' leave. The government has also accused him of serving the white minority's interests. The judge was believed to have been under pressure to quit.

GOVT BID TO DOUBLE ORGAN DONOR NUMBERS

The Government is planning to double the number of people on the organ donation register by 2010 Health Secretary Alan Milburn has said. The number registered would go from 8m to 16m under the scheme. Mr Milburn also pledged a 100% rise in kidney transplants by 2005 with heart and lung transplants rising by 10% during the same period. He described the changes as "an unprecedented national effort".

ABATTOIR CHIEFS GIVE WARNING OVER JOBS

Abattoir bosses have warned that unless livestock movements start again soon as many as 5 000 jobs across Scotland could be lost later this week. The Scottish Association of Meat Wholesalers said supplies of livestock will dry up by Thursday. The meat industry is fearful that the ban on animal movements prompted by foot-and-mouth disease concerns will be extended beyond Friday. Abbatoirs suggested they be allowed to operate under strict controls.

CHHOKAR FAMILY PULLS OUT OF AN INQUIRY

The parents of murdered Asian waiter Surjit Chhokar have pulled out of a meeting with the Scottish Parliament's equal opportunities committee. The committee is holding one of two inquiries under way into the case. Three men were cleared of Mr Chhokar's murder after two trials and his family have called for a public investigation. The family said it was angry that Scotland's top law officers & justice minister were to give their evidence in public while the family was not.

GOVT SHUTS PATHS TO STOP FOOT-AND-MOUTH

The Government has introduced powers to shut down rights of way in England & Wales in an effort to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth. Under them councils have discretionary rights to shut down paths across individual premises & affected areas. The Scottish Executive is expected to announce similar measures later today. Meanwhile many National Trust & Forestry Commission properties in affected areas have been closed off.

EXECUTIVE WILL CONSIDER SUBSIDENCE AID

The Scottish Executive has said it will consider financial aid for Edinburgh residents facing evacuation from their homes over subsidence fears. About 150 people have to leave their 54 flats in the Moredun Park estate as investigations are carried out. Edinburgh City Council has called on ministers to establish an emergency fund to help residents. An executive spokeswoman said: "Any request for financial assistance will be considered as a matter of urgency."
