DANDO MURDER ACCUSED PICTURE BAN LIFTED

Pictures of Barry George ` the man accused of killing TV presenter Jill Dando ` can be published for the first time today a judge has ruled. Mr Justice Gage overturned the previous ban as he heard a second day of legal submissions at the Old Bailey. Mr George 40 of Fulham west London denies murdering Miss Dando 37 killed at her Fulham home on April 26 1999. The trial could last up to six weeks. A jury could be sworn in tomorrow.

Zimbabwe's chief justice who ruled against President Robert Mugabe's land seizure programme is to retire early an official newspaper has reported. State-run paper The Herald said Anthony Gubbay's term had been cut short after he reneged on an agreement to take four months' leave. The government has also accused him of serving the white minority's interests. The judge was believed to have been under pressure to quit.

GOVT SHUTS PATHS TO STOP FOOT-AND-MOUTH

The Government has introduced powers to shut down rights of way in England & Wales in an effort to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth. Under them councils have discretionary rights to shut down paths across individual premises & affected areas. The Scottish Executive is expected to announce similar measures later today. Meanwhile many National Trust & Forestry Commission properties in affected areas have been closed off.

GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS SET FOR SKIBO DATE

Senior Scottish Executive officials are to attend a conference at Skibo Castle this week ` at a cost of £40 000. Opposition MSPs are expected to attack the decision to stage the event at the Highland venue which hosted pop star Madonna's exclusive wedding last year. The 20 officials will be joined by government officials from Nordic countries at the event where help for rural economies is on the agenda. The bill will be met by the Scottish Executive & two enterprise agencies.

DANDO MURDER TRIAL ADJOURNED FOR DAY

The trial of the man accused of killing TV Crimewatch presenter Jill Dando has been adjourned until tomorrow. The case at the Old Bailey has so far involved legal arguments. Barry George 40 from Fulham west London has denied murdering 37-year-old Miss Dando at her home in Fulham on April 26 1999. The judge yesterday overturned a ban on any photograph or artist's impression of Mr George being published.

ENVOY DELIVERS US APOLOGY OVER SINKING

US President George W Bush has written an apology to Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori over the sinking of a training boat by a US submarine. Special envoy Admiral William Fallon hand-delivered the letter to Tokyo. He said his visit underscored the importance the US placed on its relationship with Japan. Nine people died when the trawler Ehime Maru was hit by a submarine off Hawaii on February 9.
