HAULIERS WARN OF RENEWED FUEL PROTESTS

Drivers who took part in a go-slow protest over fuel prices have warned of further demonstrations. A convoy of taxis lorries tractors and buses travelled from Cross Hands in south Wales to Swansea city centre. The protesters have been angered by Shell's decision to raise the price of unleaded petrol by 1p a litre. Organiser Mark Greene said the response was "fantastic" & he did not rule out a return of last year's blockades.

POLICE OFFICER DIES IN PATROL CAR CRASH

A police officer has been killed & another seriously injured after their patrol car crashed. Pc Peter Evans 33 died at the scene and driver PC Wayne Naylor was taken to hospital with serious chest injuries. The accident happened on the A14 at Great Saxham in Suffolk. The officers based at Bury St Edmunds traffic unit were completing their shift when the car left the road overturned & hit an electricity pole.

FRUSTRATED FAN TOO BIG TO WATCH FINAL

A football fan is missing one of his club's biggest games for years because he is too big to fit into one seat. Birmingham City fan Barry Austin 31 from Solihull weighs 31 stone & has a special season ticket which lets him take up three seats for home games. But his request to take the same amount of space for Sunday's Worthington Cup final in Cardiff was turned down. The frustrated fan will have to watch the match against Liverpool at home.

UK CHILDREN HURT IN AUSTRIA BUS CRASHES

Three children & a teacher from the Wirral are expected to remain in hospital for several days after they were involved in a bus crash in Austria The crash was one of two involving British school parties on the same stretch of the snow-hit Tauern autobahn near St Johann. Youngsters from a school in Twickenham Middlesex were also taken to hospital. Three youngsters kept in overnight are expected to be released later today.

COURT Damien Duberry 20 and Leon Sobers 22 both of Ipswich have been remanded in custody by magistrates in the town after being charged with the murder of barmaid Janet Fleming 38. OUTBREAK Firefighters were not allowed to leave the scene of a blaze at a farm near Alnmouth Northumberland until their equipment had been disinfected due to foot-and-mouth disease concerns. FALL Rescue teams were called in when a man fell 60ft while ice climbing on Ben Nevis. Police say he was taken to hospital with back injuries.

80 000 FISH KILLED BY RIVER POLLUTION

More than 80 000 fish have been killed after farm slurry polluted a two-mile stretch of a river & a fish farm in Devon the Environment Agency said. The slurry which strips water of oxygen because of its ammonia content escaped into Bradiford Water at Muddiford near Barnstaple on Friday. As a result a fish farm downstream has lost almost its entire stock of trout. About 1 000 brown trout & bullheads in the river have also been killed.

A man named as 41-year-old Terence Blackbourne was killed & his wife & two children were injured when their car was involved in a collision on the A166 at Stamford Bridge east Yorkshire BRIDGE Kingston motorway bridge in Glasgow is clear of cones for the first time in seven years after a marathon strengthening project. However more repairs are due to begin next year. AIR Lufthansa will start flights from London City Airport to Berlin & Lufthansa CityLine will begin flights from Newcastle to Dusseldorf in March.

WRECKAGE OF MISSING CESSNA "DISCOVERED"

Mountain rescuers have found parts of wreckage believed to be from a light airplane missing since December. The Cessna carrying Robert Maclean & fellow company director Ewan Spalding went missing on December 13 in the Scottish Highlands. A police spokesman said a search was launched after a hill walker spotted wreckage in the Torridon area. The search is to continue once weather conditions improve he said.

MURDER PROBE LAUNCHED AFTER BODY FOUND

An investigation has been launched into the murder of a Helensburgh man Strathclyde Police have said. Police discovered the body of a 26-year -old man after they were called to a house in the town's Old Luss Road. A 27-year-old man who was apparently seriously injured was also discovered at the property. A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal. Detectives from Dumbarton CID are appealing for anyone who saw or heard anything unusual to contact them.

WOMAN TRAPPED UNDER TRACTOR BY HER HAIR

A woman suffered facial injuries after an accident in Hamilton in which she was trapped by her hair under the wheels of a tractor. The 27-year-old woman was struck by the machine as she tried to weave through traffic at Hamilton Cross. It had to reverse at a snail's pace to allow a paramedic ambulance crew to cut her hair so she could be released. She was taken by ambulance to Hairmyres Hospital East Kilbride suffering from severe facial injuries.

SAFETY ADVICE AS BRIDGE RE-OPENS

Europe's busiest road bridge has been re-opened after seven years of repairs and restrictions. The traffic cones a feature of Glasgow's Kingston Bridge since 1994 have gone from all 10 lanes and the bridge has been strengthened. Motorists are being urged to take care as they come to terms with the unfamiliar road system over coming days The reopening marks the completion of the first phase of repairs but further remedial work is planned next year.
