MP GALLOWAY FLIES TO IRAQ AFTER BOMBING

Glasgow Labour MP George Galloway has flown to Baghdad following the Allied bombing of Iraq last night. The MP ` a strong critic of the Government's policy on Iraq ` plans to assess the damage done by Allied jets. He says the raids were not legally nor morally legitimate & labelled them a "cruel & criminal" attack on the ordinary people of the country. The MP arrested at the Faslane Trident base this week argued the bombing will be deplored by most across the world.

Iraq will fight back in the face of attacks by British & US warplanes which targeted radar systems outside Baghdad Saddam Hussein has said. The jets fired missiles at the radars which Britain said seriously threatened allied planes over the no-fly zones. Saddam told his Revolutionary Command Council he would not bow to "criminal American aggression towards Iraq". Iraq said two civilians were killed & more than 20 injured in the raids.

RAIDS "A MEASURED RESPONSE" SAYS No 10

Downing Street has called the allied air raids on the outskirts of Baghdad a "measured response" to Iraqi attacks. A spokesman said Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon authorised the raids this week after discussions with the US. Eight RAF planes were involved in the operation ` six Tornados & two VC 10 tanker aircraft the MoD said. It said more Iraqi missiles were fired at air patrols in January than throughout the whole of last year.

DOWNING ST PROTEST AGAINST AIR STRIKES

About 50 people have protested in Downing Street against last night's Baghdad air strikes. Demonstrators gathered from Voices in the Wilderness a group which campaigns for the lifting of sanctions on Iraq. Campaigners are calling for the lifting of the ten-year sanctions which they say only hurt ordinary Iraqi people. Spokesman Malin Rai said the bombing by US & UK jets "has no foundation in international law".

YACHTSWOMAN RETURNS TO CHEERING CROWDS

Yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur has celebrated her record-breaking performance in the Vendee Globe on her return to Southampton. She was greeted by thousands of well- wishers as she returned to Britain MacArthur finished second becoming the youngest person & fastest woman to sail solo around the world. "It was a wonderful welcome in France and to come back to something pretty much the same is wonderful " she said.

EUROPE WILL BE ELECTION DIVIDE ` COOK

Europe will be one of the "great divides" between Labour & the Tories at the election Robin Cook has said. Tories were "running scared" on the EU and Tory eurosceptics were "the militant tendency" of their party. "A Labour victory will ensure Britain is leading Europe. A Conservative victory will ensure Britain is leaving Europe " said the Foreign Secretary. He was speaking to a closed session of Labour's spring conference in Glasgow.

ARAB BODY CONDEMNS ALLIED RAIDS ON IRAQ

The Arab League has condemned yesterday's air raid on Iraq by British and US warplanes. Secretary-General Dr Ismat Abd-al-Majid said it carried "no justification & runs counter to UN resolutions & the bases of international norms". It raised feelings of anger & annoyance in the Arab world he said. Israel said it was not worried about Iraq following the air raids but this did not mean Iraq was not a threat.

KOSOVO SERBS MOURN VICTIMS OF BUS BOMB

Hundreds of Kosovan Serbs have gathered to mourn victims of a bus bombing which killed seven people & injured 43. Serbs from surrounding villages were converging on the cemetery in Gracanica near Pristina where some victims are believed to have come from. Kosovo Serbs are due to hold a protest rally in Mitrovica. Belgrade has declared Sunday a day of mourning. Ethnic Albanian leaders condemned the attack as a serious blow to peace.

TWO KILLED IN MULTIPLE CAR PILE-UP

Two people were killed & 10 people were taken to hospital after a four-car crash just after midnight police said. The multiple pile-up happened on Bradford Road in Batley West Yorkshire A 17-year-old girl in the rear of a Toyota taxi died in a collision with an Audi travelling in the same direction. A man also died police said. Ten people including a pedestrian were taken to hospital. Police said two had serious injuries.

ARMED HIJACKER FORCES FLIGHT DIVERSION

An armed man claiming to be an Iraqi supporter of Saddam Hussein has been ovepowered after diverting a plane with the US ambassador to Yemen aboard. Two shots were fired but the 91 passengers on board the Boeing 727 on an internal flight within Yemen were not injured. The crew managed to overpower the hijacker who was holding a pistol. Most passengers including US envoy Barbara Bodine disembarked at Djibouti

MINISTER DEFENDS AIR STRIKES ON IRAQ

Defence Minister Baroness Symons has said Friday's US & UK air strikes on Iraq were a "proportionate response in self-defence" to Iraqi missile attacks. January had seen more surface to air missile attacks on allied planes than during the whole of 2000 she said in a statement to the House of Lords. "The threat is real. Saddam Hussein is trying to kill our aircrew " she added. She said he may be passing off military deaths in the attacks as civilian.
