I DID NOT BREAK CONDUCT CODE ` MEACHER

Environment Minister Michael Meacher has insisted he has not broken the Ministerial Code of Conduct over his outside interests. The Tories say he should not take decisions on private rented housing as his family own at least nine homes. The MPs' register of interests lists that Mr Meacher rents out London flats. In a written Commons reply he said he had ensured there was no conflict of interest with his ministerial position.

FRENCH MINISTERS SUED FOR AIR POLLUTION

A French asthma sufferer has taken three ministers to court over the health risks posed by air pollution. Dr Laurence Husson is being supported by an environmentalist group in his action against the health environment and transport ministers. The Ecologie Sans Frontiere group accuses the ministers of downplaying evidence of growing problems. They first complained after an official report said pollution caused 30 000 premature deaths in France each year.

MANDELA TRIAL CD RELEASED BY LIBRARY

The British Library has released a recording of a speech made by Nelson Mandela at his trial in 1964. In the courtroom tape recording the man who went on to become the president of South Africa tells of his hopes for a "democratic & free society". Mr Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment for sabotage offences hours after the speech. He was released from prison 11 years ago today on February 11 1990.

CHIRAC ATTACKS MISSILE DEFENCE PLAN

French President Jacques Chirac has attacked US plans for a "son of Star Wars" missile defence system as a "strong incitement to proliferation". The system would "strongly disturb international relations" & "engender tensions" he said at the Anglo-French summit in Cahors. He said it was the old story of the struggle between shield & sword. "This new shield risks leading to an improvement of the sword " he added.

SUMMIT BOOSTS HOPE OF ISRAELI COALITION

A second meeting between Israeli Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon & beaten rival Ehud Barak has boosted hopes of forming a national unity government. Mr Sharon offered Mr Barak's Labour Party a choice of key cabinet posts ` defence foreign affairs & finance. Former Labour Prime Minister Shimon Peres told the BBC he was optimistic. Meanwhile in one of its last meetings the outgoing cabinet of Mr Barak has declared his peace proposals dead.

BUSH ORDERS OVERHAUL OF DEFENCE POLICY

President George W Bush has ordered a "top-to-bottom" review of United States defence policy. warheads from the current level of 7 000 to around 2 500. Mr Bush has asked Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to head the review. Senior defence official Andrew Marshall is also reported to be looking at military strategy & use of weapons.

UK TROOPS EXTEND SIERRA LEONE TRAINING

The Government has announced plans to extend British troops' training of the Sierra Leonean army by eight months until the end of September. Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon said the move would help make the West African state's army "self-sufficient". The British military presence will remain at around 600 at any time. British troops have made an "important contribution to stability in Sierra Leone" Mr Hoon added.

WIFE-KILLER FAILS IN PRISON SUICIDE BID

Convicted wife-murderer Mitchell Quy is recovering after attempting to kill himself in prison. Staff at Altcourse Prison in Liverpool found Quy from Merseyside in his cell. He was still conscious. He was jailed for life last month for killing mother-of-two Lynsey cutting her up scattering her body parts & then pretending she had abandoned him. Quy a former casino croupier is expected to return to prison today.

WEDNESDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS AT WESTMINSTER

Britain must work with Israel's newly elected Prime Minister to bring peace to the Middle East whatever differences there were before Tony Blair said. Peers condemned the "deplorable import" of German meat contaminated with spinal cord tissue. Junior health minister Lord Hunt acknowledged the seriousness of the contamination. Surgeons are carrying out unnecessary hysterectomies leaving some women feeling suicidal & with a loss of libido said Labour's Diana Organ.
