BRINK'S-MAT ROBBERY POLICE BEGIN DIG

Police investigating the Brink's-Mat raid are believed to be digging at a site on the south coast of England. Scotland Yard said officers from the Flying Squad were searching an area in Ore Hastings East Sussex. Police sources said the search was in connection with the Brink's-Mat inquiry The theft of gold bullion & jewels worth £26m from the Brink's-Mat vaults at London's Heathrow Airport in 1983 was Britain's biggest robbery.

FRENCH POLICE INTERCEPT UK-BOUND DRUGS

Police in eastern France have arrested a man trying to smuggle heroin worth #4m across the European continent. The smuggler an Italian national said he was on his way to Britain when he was stopped in his camper van at the tolls in Villefranche-sur-Saone. A search turned up 120 packets of the drug which had originally come from Turkey with a total weight of 68kg. The haul which is the French police's third biggest heroin seizure followed a lengthy surveillance operation.

Britain must work with Israel's newly elected Prime Minister to bring peace to the Middle East whatever differences there were before Tony Blair said. Peers condemned the "deplorable import" of German meat contaminated with spinal cord tissue. Junior health minister Lord Hunt acknowledged the seriousness of the contamination. Surgeons are carrying out unnecessary hysterectomies leaving some women feeling suicidal & with a loss of libido said Labour's Diana Organ.

HOME OFFICE REJECTS KEY REVIEW ON DRUGS

The findings of a key report into the use of drugs has been rejected by the Home Office. The Police Foundation inquiry had called for wide-ranging changes to the classification of drugs such as cannabis LSD & Ecstasy. But the Home Office has rejected 24 of the inquiry's main recommendations. Viscountess Runciman who chaired the inquiry has described the Government's response as "mistaken & complacent".

HEALTH TRUST SOLD SKIN FOR MoD RESEARCH

A health trust has apologised to plastic surgery patients for selling surplus skin for chemical weapons research without proper explanation. ( 0 Salisbury Health Care Trust sold breast and abdominal skin to the Porton Down establishment for £17 000 a year. Patients signed a consent form but it did not fully explain the purpose was to develop drugs & protective creams. A trust statement said it was more "appropriate" to ask patients directly.

LORDS PENSION BOOST FOR PART-TIME STAFF

The House of Lords has ruled that part- time employees can claim backdated pension contributions to 1976. The Lords ruled employees must claim within six months of termination of employment to be entitled to the rights The decision followed a campaign by unions claiming part-timers should have the same entitlement as full-time staff The case had been backed by the European Court of Justice. The TUC claims 60 000 people will benefit.

MANDELSON DISMISSES EURO POST RUMOURS

Peter Mandelson has dismissed reports that he wants to become a European Union commissioner as media speculation The former Northern Ireland Secretary said he intended to stand in Hartlepool at the forthcoming General Election. He told the BBC he had felt the "greatest satisfaction" in serving the town's voters. Mr Mandelson likened his fall from the Cabinet over the Hinduja passports scandal to a "ghastly road accident".

Two disabled veterans of the Karabakh war almost set themselves on fire in protest at low benefit levels. Passers-by saved them from sure death. Over 2 000 veterans are on a protest hunger strike. Azerbaijan lost the war over Karabakh to Armenia in 1994. ARMENIAA couple have named their new- born twin boys Jacques & Chirac in honour of the French president. France last month recognized the Ottoman army genocide campaign against the Armenians in 1915 and faces a boycott by the Turkish government.

Britain & France have negotiated a deal to stop illegal immigrants getting into the UK on board Eurostar trains. A joint commission is being set up ` and UK immigration officials will check people boarding Paris-London services. France will also make the Paris to Calais leg an international route so all passengers must carry proper papers Prime Minister Tony Blair & French President Jacques Chirac agreed the deal at the Anglo-French summit.

SHUTTLE BLASTS OFF WITH £1bn LABORATORY

A £1bn science laboratory is on its way to the International Space Station after the launch of the space shuttle Atlantis from Cape Canaveral in Florida under construction until 2006. The crew of five US astronauts will reach the space station on Friday. Three spacewalks are planned between Destiny & the space station.

POLICE INVESTIGATE HOW YOUNG BOY DIED

Further tests are being carried out to discover how a six-year-old boy whose body was found in the same house as that of his pregnant mother died. Police believe Sam MacMartin could have The body of Mrs MacMartin was found in the garage of the detached house in Longton near Preston. Police said a post-mortem examination on the boy had proved inconclusive.

MAN QUESTIONED AFTER BABY FOUND DEAD

A man is being questioned on suspicion of murder after the death of a baby. Police officers found the nine-month- old boy in a house in Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire after being contacted by a neighbour. A post-mortem examination carried out on the baby showed he had died from a head injury. The 18-year-old man has been arrested and is being questioned on suspicion of murder at Mansfield police station.
