BRITISH SOLDIERS QUIZZED OVER ASSAULT

British soldiers are being quizzed about an assault on one of the men accused of murdering a member of the Army's bobsleigh team in Austria. Corporal Derek Osborne 31 from Cumbria was kicked to death outside a disco in Innsbruck. A police spokesman said one of the three men arrested so far in connection with the murder is in hospital. He said British soldiers were being questioned about his injuries.

MAN IN COURT OVER MOTORWAY CRASH DEATHS

A lorry driver has appeared in court accused of causing the deaths of six people in a motorway crash. Brian France 54 of Barnsley South Yorkshire is charged with six counts of causing death by dangerous driving. The accident happened on the A1(M) near Boroughbridge North Yorks in November Mr France was granted conditional bail at York Crown Court & will appear there again on April 27 for a plea & directions hearing.

BLAIR CONGRATULATES SHARON ON VICTORY

The Prime Minister has congratulated new Israeli premier Ariel Sharon on his election victory. In a brief call Tony Blair offered his help to build a more stable future for the Middle East peace process. He said Britain & the European Union remained willing to play any role if it were useful. A spokesman said Downing Street knew Mr Sharon had a different approach to his predecessor but accepted his victory.

UK TOLD TO TEST 65 000 CATTLE FOR BSE

The European Commission has told Britain to test an extra 65 000 cattle in new measures to combat BSE. The cattle are those born in the 12 months from August 1 1997 the year following the start of a total ban on meat & bonemeal in feed for cows. The EC said the tests may provide new information on the origins of BSE. It has also proposed curbing the sale of t-bone steaks in 10 EU countries not including Britain.

TUESDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS AT WESTMINSTER

A bid to establish a Parliamentary Commission to find out the cost to Britain of being in the European Union was launched in the Commons. Tory Michael Fabricant's Analysis of Costs & Benefits (European Union) Bill aims to discover whether the UK benefits from its membership of the EU. The Litchfield MP said the body would report back to Parliament regularly. But the Bill is unlikely to become law due to lack of parliamentary time.

FRANCE SNUBBED AS TURKISH ANGER SIMMERS

Turkey is boycotting a series of sports events in France in the latest sign of Ankara's continuing displeasure at last month's vote in the French parliament. French MPs had passed a resolution describing the deaths of 1.5m Armenians in 1915 under the Ottoman empire as genocide which Turkey hotly disputes. Now Turkey has withdrawn from eight sports meetings in France this year. They include major European athletics badminton gymnastic wrestling skiing and yachting qualification tournaments.

TUESDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS AT WESTMINSTER

MPswere urged to sweep away a 200- year-old law preventing some ministers of religion from joining their ranks. Ministers want to rush the House of Commons (Removal of Clergy Disqualification) Bill through the Commons before the general election. Home Office Minister Mike O'Brien said it was time to remove this "archaic" restriction on Commons membership. He said it should be the electorate's decision whether someone becomes an MP.

MP WANTS PROBE INTO £5m GIFT TO TORIES

A Labour MP has called for a probe into a £5m donation to the Conservative Party from a betting entrepreneur. company IG Index is running bets on the outcome of the general election. Mr Simpson has asked the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner Elizabeth Filkin to look into the donation. He has also asked the Financial Services Authority to investigate.

TUESDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS AT WESTMINSTER

Hospices will receive as much in NHS cash as from fundraising within three to four years Alan Milburn told MPs. The Health Secretary said they were a crucial element of the Government's drive to improve cancer services. Improving health & fewer road deaths have caused a drop in the number of transplant organs available to the critically ill the Government said. It rejected Tory claims it was not doing enough to help beat the problem.

HOME OFFICE REJECTS KEY REVIEW ON DRUGS

The findings of a key report into the use of drugs has been rejected by the Home Office. The Police Foundation inquiry had called for wide-ranging changes to the classification of drugs such as cannabis LSD & Ecstasy. But the Home Office has rejected 24 of the inquiry's main recommendations. Viscountess Runciman who chaired the inquiry has described the Government's response as "mistaken & complacent".

SHARON LOOKS TO FORM ISRAELI GOVERNMENT

Likud party leader Ariel Sharon is beginning the task of forming a new coalition government after being swept to power as Israel's new prime minister Following the result defeated premier Ehud Barak announced his resignation as Labour Party leader. Latest figures give Mr Sharon 62% of the vote and Mr Barak just 37% although the turnout was low. The right wing premier now has 45 days in which to form a coalition.

TORIES PLEDGE TO REFORM TAX ON SAVINGS

The Tories are pledging to abolish tax on all savings & dividends except for people who earn more than £32 000. The combined cost of the tax cuts ` about £3bn ` would be covered by Tory public spending savings of £8bn said Shadow Chancellor Michael Portillo. Mr Portillo added: "Anybody who pays tax at the lower or basic rate will gain if they have savings." It was "the most radical change to the taxation of savings for a generation".

Qs UPROAR OVER THE MANDELSON AFFAIR

Tony Blair has said Peter Mandelson is "a bigger man than many of his critics" during furious Commons exchanges with Opposition leader William Hague. During Prime Minister's Question Time he said Mr Hague had "lived down to my expectations" in his comments. Mr Hague said the PM made a "monumental error of judgment" restoring Mr Mandelson to Government after 10 months He then had to sack the same minister twice for the same offence he said.
